Juventus Sign Jhon Lucumí: A Key Defensive Addition

Juventus finally have their defender.

After a summer spent circling options and weighing prices, the Bianconeri opened the week of the new season by landing the man they had been chasing: Bologna’s Jhon Lucumí, fresh off a standout World Cup and the driving force behind his own move.

A deal that wouldn’t die

The transfer had been simmering for weeks. Lucumí wanted Juventus, and only Juventus. The 28-year-old Colombian turned down other approaches, effectively putting his career on pause while Bologna and Juve argued over numbers and structure.

Late last week, the stalemate broke. On Monday, Juventus made it official.

The club will pay Bologna an initial €19.5 million for the center back, with the fee spread over three financial years. Ancillary costs can reach €0.6 million, and a further €2 million is on the table in bonuses tied to performance targets. All told, the package could climb to €22 million.

Lucumí has signed a four-year contract running until 30 June 2030 and is reported to earn around €2.5 million net per season.

From Bologna’s backbone to Juve’s rebuild

This is not a speculative signing. Lucumí arrives in Turin as a proven Serie A defender and a central figure in Bologna’s transformation.

Across four seasons with the Rossoblù, he became the anchor of a back line that first pushed into the European conversation and then broke through. He was at the heart of the team that surged into Champions League qualification under Thiago Motta, then returned a year later to lift the Coppa Italia.

His reliability became a given. In each of his four Serie A campaigns with Bologna, Lucumí logged at least 2,200 league minutes, a marker of both fitness and trust. Coaches built around him. Opponents planned for him.

Now that dependability is Juventus’ to use.

For a club that has spent the summer searching for fresh legs and leadership in defense, Lucumí arrives as more than just another body. He is the first major piece of a back-line refresh — and a defender who pushed for this move as hard as Juventus did.

The waiting is over. The real question is how quickly he can turn that long-held desire into authority at the heart of the Bianconeri defense.
