Karim Adeyemi Awaits Camp Nou Presentation

Karim Adeyemi will have to wait for his Camp Nou moment.

The former Borussia Dortmund winger, who completed his move to FC Barcelona last week, has not yet been unveiled on the pitch in front of supporters, breaking with one of the club’s most recognisable traditions.

At Barça, big signings are usually walked out onto the Camp Nou turf, ball at their feet, cameras flashing, fans pressed up against the stands for a first glimpse in the new colours. With Adeyemi, that curtain-raiser has been pushed back.

The delay has nothing to do with paperwork or fitness. It comes down to the World Cup final.

Spain’s 1-0 extra-time win over Argentina dominated the football landscape yesterday, and Barcelona’s hierarchy were in the thick of it. Club president Joan Laporta and sporting director Deco travelled to the showpiece and are not expected back in the city until Tuesday.

Without them, there would be no grand presentation.

So Adeyemi waits. The plan now is clear: he will be formally presented to the media and the fans on Wednesday, 22 July, at the Catalan club’s stadium, once Laporta and Deco are back at the helm.

This was not how Barcelona originally drew it up. The club had hoped to wrap the deal before the weekend, allowing the 24-year-old to step straight into training under new coach Hansi Flick and begin the hard work of earning his place.

Instead, his first real touch of Barcelona grass will come with the spotlight firmly on him, a few days later than planned, but with all eyes watching how a new era on the wing begins.
