Konrad Laimer Injury Concerns for Bayern Munich

Konrad Laimer’s pre-season took a worrying turn as the Austria international limped out of Bayern Munich’s friendly after an early injury to his right leg.

The midfielder went down in clear distress following a challenge, immediately clutching at his leg. The replays did little to clarify the exact damage. His knee? His thigh? Perhaps both. What they did show was a player in obvious agony.

Two Bayern staff members rushed on and helped Laimer from the pitch, his right leg quickly wrapped in bandages as he made his way slowly towards the touchline. The 29-year-old cut a frustrated figure, with the game barely underway.

Vincent Kompany had no choice but to act. In just the ninth minute, he turned to Sacha Boey, sending on the full-back who, despite being heavily linked with a move away, was suddenly thrust into action.

For Bayern, this was supposed to be a valuable workout: a serious test against last season’s third-placed Bundesliga side and the penultimate tune-up before the Super Cup showdown with Borussia Dortmund on Saturday week. Another friendly, against 2. Bundesliga outfit 1. FC Heidenheim, follows on Tuesday.

Now, though, attention inside the club will be fixed on medical reports and scan results. With competitive action looming, Bayern can ill afford to lose a key figure like Laimer just as the real season is about to start.
