Kyle Walker Speaks Out on Manchester City's Premier League Financial Charges
Kyle Walker Addresses Manchester City's Financial Controversy
Former Manchester City captain Kyle Walker has finally spoken about the Premier League's ruling that found the club guilty of breaching financial regulations. Despite the verdict, Walker insists the team’s on-field accomplishments and memories cannot be erased.
Walker Stands by City's Achievements
As one of the prominent figures from Manchester City's dominant era, Walker reflected on the recent legal challenges faced by his former club. The defender spent eight trophy-filled years at the Etihad Stadium from 2017 to 2025 and believes the legacy created on the pitch remains intact regardless of court decisions.
The independent commission's decision, which revealed systematic breaches of financial fair play rules spanning nine years, shocked English football. Yet Walker emphasized the lasting bond forged during those victorious campaigns.
"Obviously it doesn’t look great. I know it’s in an appeal stage so, for me to start commenting on the legal action and everything like that, probably it’s not going to do myself justice or anyone involved in it," he told talkSPORT.
The Value of Hard-Earned Trophies
During his time with Manchester City, Walker celebrated a remarkable haul of trophies including six Premier League titles, two FA Cups, four League Cups, and two Community Shields domestically. On the international stage, he helped the club win a Champions League, UEFA Super Cup, and FIFA Club World Cup.
"At a personal level, I can say the lads, we spent many and many a great year celebrating many trophies and everything like that and that’s something that, whatever happens, they can’t take away from us because we’ve experienced those nights," Walker said. "So, whatever will be, will be, and it’s just down to the appeal now and what goes from there."
Manchester City's Firm Appeal
Manchester City has lodged a formal appeal against the judgment, which claims over £830 million in owner funding was used improperly to boost revenue and comply artificially with financial rules. The club denies all accusations.
"The opinion contains clear material errors, of law, principle and fact, and is unsafe," the club stated last Friday. "The club is innocent of the accusations made by the Premier League and a comprehensive body of irrefutable evidence exists in support of all of its positions relating to this case."
Respect for the Fans
Now playing for Burnley, currently last in the Championship, Walker also acknowledged the impact of the scandal on Manchester City's supporters who have supported the team through its peak years.
"It’s something that we probably don’t want to talk about because we want to be looked upon as winning them trophies, winning them the right way," he said. "It’s very difficult because we’ve worked very hard for them, and not just us, I look at the fans as well. I look at the fans that have travelled up and down the country, travelled abroad to Istanbul when we won the treble and stuff like that, and they deserve that night as well."
