Lamine Yamal Shines in Barcelona's 5-0 Victory Over Valencia

Lamine Yamal is back – and he didn’t bother easing his way in.

The 19-year-old lit up Mestalla on Sunday night, striking twice in FC Barcelona’s ruthless 5-0 demolition of Valencia in La Liga. They were his first goals of the league campaign, and they framed the entire contest: one to open the scoring, one to close it.

The tone was set almost immediately. In the sixth minute, Yamal burst onto a pass, gliding into space before improvising a finish that summed up his talent. On the run, he swung his leg up to waist height and, with the tip of his toes, flicked the ball past the keeper and into the net. Not power. Pure feel.

The celebration carried just as much meaning. Yamal put his thumb to his mouth, a nod to his toddler brother, Keyne, who was reportedly celebrating his fourth birthday on the day of the match. The pressure didn’t relent late on, and Yamal made sure his night ended the way it began: with the ball in the net. In the 84th minute, Dani Olmo slipped a pass into him. Yamal opened up his body, then whipped a left-footed strike across himself and into the goal, sealing the rout and bookending the performance with another moment of quality.

The result keeps Barcelona perfect at 4-0 and sitting on top of the La Liga table, the defending champions already staking out familiar territory.

For Yamal, who has already rewritten record books for both club and league and missed the end of last season with a hamstring injury, this felt like a statement.
