Lamine Yamal's Fitness Dilemma Ahead of Valencia Clash
Lamine Yamal’s late scare has thrown a flicker of doubt over Barcelona’s trip to Mestalla – but Hansi Flick is taking him to Valencia anyway.
The teenager skipped Barça’s final training session before the clash, Sport reported, working alone while 23 teammates went through the usual drills. Among the group: Gavi, Gabriel Jesus and Dominik Livakovic. Yamal, the brightest spark of Barcelona’s start to the season, was apart from them.
Flick explained the decision simply: Yamal took a knock recently, and the staff chose caution. No drama, no alarms, just protection. The German confirmed the winger will travel with the squad, with a call on his involvement to be made closer to kick-off.
The player’s stance is clear. He wants to play. He hates training on his own. Flick underlined that the youngster is in excellent shape – physically sharp, mentally strong, full of confidence – and highlighted his level in the previous match. In the coach’s eyes, minutes on the pitch help Yamal more than extra training sessions. Even so, he drew a line: they must decide whether he starts or sits this one out.
Heat, pressure and a selection puzzle
The Yamal issue lands on Flick’s desk in a week already loaded with complications. Sport described it as an “unexpected obstacle” for the coach, one that inevitably brings a measure of concern. Yamal, even floated as a future captain, is expected to be handled with extreme care at Mestalla, where conditions will be brutal.
Kick-off is scheduled for the hottest part of the day. Forecasts point to around 34 degrees Celsius inside the Valencia stadium. Suffocating heat, in the heart of summer, for a high-intensity league match. Sport called it a very bad idea, and it’s hard to argue. Both teams will feel it. Both coaches must plan around it.
Barcelona have travelled with 24 players, Flick opting to take every available option and delay his final cut until the last moment. One of them will end up watching from the stands. It’s the first time this season he has faced such a crowded bench.
There are good reasons for that. Gavi is back from injury. Gabriel Jesus is available again. Livakovic has been called up for the first time and is expected to step in as the second-choice goalkeeper. Flick suddenly has depth, and with it, decisions that carry weight.
Rotation on the horizon
This is not a one-game week. It’s a test of management. Sport stressed that changes are coming: Flick will turn to his reserves with two demanding fixtures in quick succession – the Champions League opener against Feyenoord and the trip to Valencia, a league game that carries more than just three points.
Real Madrid’s slip at the Villamarín has cracked the door open. For Barcelona, the equation is simple and tempting: win at Mestalla and they move three points clear of their great rivals for the first time this season. No tiebreakers, no goal difference. Clear daylight.
Sport underlined what that would mean. Victory would not only send Barça into the fourth round as outright leaders, it would also extend the impressive form they have shown since the campaign began. Flick’s side has started with authority. The message from inside the club is to keep walking that path with “confident strides”.
Now the question hangs over Valencia: does Flick risk his teenage star in the heat of Mestalla, or does he trust the depth he has just recovered to protect him and still land the statement win that could tilt the early title narrative?
