LeBron James Orchestrates 76ers' Offense in Debut with New Star-Loaded Lineup
The Philadelphia 76ers showed a smooth and effective offense during their first game featuring the newly assembled star lineup that includes LeBron James, Jaylen Brown, Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, and VJ Edgecombe.
In Thursday's preseason clash against the Brooklyn Nets, James took control of the ball handling duties, primarily playing as a point forward. This approach quickly paid off as Philadelphia looked well-synchronized despite it being their first time playing together.
Ball Movement Flows Through LeBron
James assisted on two of the team’s first three baskets, including an impressive no-look pass to Edgecombe near the basket. Another early play featured a 'hockey assist' from James who found Embiid with a bounce pass during a pick-and-roll. Embiid then set up Brown for an easy dunk.
The 76ers began shooting brilliantly, making 7 of their first 8 field goals, showcasing crisp ball movement that made them look like a seasoned unit rather than a fresh combination.
James Prefers Facilitating Over Scoring Early On
LeBron was happy to set up teammates before attempting his first shot late in the first quarter—a driving layup drawing a foul, leading to two free throws. He finished the quarter with four points, all from the line, and five assists. At that point, Maxey was the primary scorer with 10 points, helping Philadelphia hold a narrow 33-32 lead.
James didn’t record a field goal until midway through the second quarter when he completed a reverse layup off a clever pass from Maxey. By halftime, the 76ers led 58-56 with James tallying 10 points, 5 assists, 4 rebounds, 2 turnovers, and 1 steal over 18 minutes. Most of his points were at the free-throw line, as he shot 1-for-1 from the field before resting for the second half.
Maxey Leads Scorers; Embiid Struggles with Turnovers
- Maxey: 14 points on 5-of-8 shooting in the first half
- Embiid: 6 points, 3 rebounds, and 7 turnovers at halftime
- Brown: 8 points on 2-of-4 shooting before halftime
The team as a whole shot 57% (16 of 28) in the first half with assists on 12 of those made shots. However, ball security was a problem, as they committed 14 turnovers before the break, leading to more bench players getting time in the second half.
Brown finished as the top scorer with 18 points, contributing well into the third quarter.
Although this was just a preseason game without stakes, the 76ers’ performance gave a glimpse of how their offense might function when the regular season begins. The style of letting LeBron James direct the offense while surrounded by talented scorers could become a staple strategy moving forward.
