Leeds United in Talks to Sign Manchester City's James Trafford

Leeds United are reportedly negotiating to bring Manchester City goalkeeper James Trafford to Elland Road this summer. With Karl Darlow, who had been first-choice keeper under Daniel Farke last season, moving to Manchester United on a free transfer, Leeds find themselves searching for reliable competition for Lucas Perri.

Initially, there was talk of Japan international Zion Suzuki joining Leeds from Parma, but that speculation has quieted down. Instead, sources like The Athletic say Leeds are now focusing on Trafford, who is keen on leaving the Etihad Stadium to seek regular playing time.

Progress in Negotiations

Leeds seem to be making headway in convincing the England international to move north. Previous interest from Newcastle United appears to have faded, leaving Leeds as the main contender for his signature. Last season, Trafford made 17 appearances across all competitions for Manchester City, with only four in the Premier League, but he contributed to City's victories in both the FA Cup and EFL Cup.

Manchester City paid Burnley between £27m and £31m for Trafford last summer. It’s expected they will look to recover a similar amount if the transfer goes through.

Leeds Building a Stronger Squad

After securing Premier League survival in the second half of the 2025-26 campaign, Leeds are aiming higher this season. The signings of defender Tarik Muharemovic from Bosnia & Herzegovina for around £34m and Fulham’s Harry Wilson on a free transfer have already shown their intent.

If Trafford joins, it would likely be seen as an upgrade over Darlow. Many view the 23-year-old goalkeeper as a promising candidate for England’s future number one spot.
