Leeds United Sign Nico Elvedi for £8.5m

Leeds United have reunited Daniel Farke with a trusted lieutenant, completing the £8.5m signing of Switzerland defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach.

The 29-year-old centre-back has agreed a three-year deal at Elland Road, ending an 11-year spell in Germany where he became a cornerstone of the Monchengladbach back line, racking up 364 appearances.

Farke reunion seals the deal

This move is as much about familiarity as it is about experience. Elvedi worked under Farke during the 2022-23 season in the Bundesliga and made it clear that relationship pushed the transfer over the line.

"He is also a big point for this change," Elvedi said of Farke. "It was just one year but I loved to have him as a manager. I learned a lot from him and I will learn a lot now."

Leeds have paid an initial £6.8m, with a further £1.7m due in add-ons, to land a defender who brings serious international pedigree. Elvedi has 73 caps for Switzerland and played every minute of their recent run to the World Cup quarter-finals, underlining his durability and status on the biggest stage.

Leeds reshape their back line

Elvedi becomes Leeds’ fourth signing of the summer window, following James Trafford, Harry Wilson and fellow defender Tarik Muharemovic, as the club methodically rebuilds under Farke.

His arrival has immediate consequences for the existing squad. Sebastiaan Bornauw has left Elland Road to join Hamburg on a season-long loan, a clear sign that Elvedi is being brought in as a first-choice option rather than depth.

The churn did not stop there. Earlier on Wednesday, striker Joel Piroe departed for West Ham, also on a season-long loan, trimming Leeds’ attacking options while the defensive unit gains a seasoned organiser.

A manager reunited with a player he trusts. A defence anchored by a World Cup quarter-finalist. Leeds have made their move; the question now is how far this new spine can carry them.
