Liam Delap's Future at Chelsea: Como's Interest Grows

Liam Delap’s Chelsea future is back under the spotlight, with Como moving to test the waters for the out-of-favour striker.

Transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano reports that the Italian club have made an initial approach for Delap, who endured a grim first season at Stamford Bridge and now sits firmly on the fringes of the squad.

Como return to raid Chelsea

Como, who only recently wrapped up a deal for Trevoh Chalobah, are not done shopping in west London. Delap is described as “high on the shortlist” for Cesc Fabregas’ side as they hunt a centre-forward in the final stretch of the window.

Time is tight. With roughly two weeks left before the deadline, the Serie A newcomers are scrambling to land a striker, and Delap has emerged as a serious option.

The 21-year-old has been a Chelsea player for just a year, but his stock has sunk after what can fairly be called a disastrous debut campaign. A move now feels logical for all parties: Chelsea trim a squad spot and a wage, Como gain a physically imposing No 9 with something to prove, and Delap gets a reset far from the glare of the Premier League.

Permanent exit or loan gamble?

Romano’s update does not clarify whether Chelsea are pushing for a permanent sale or open to a loan. A temporary switch would come at a cost: it would occupy one of the club’s limited foreign loan slots, a resource they guard closely.

Yet with Delap tied down to a long contract and his market value at its lowest ebb, a loan could be the compromise that keeps options open. A productive season in Serie A might rebuild his reputation and either bring him back into the conversation at Chelsea or set up a more lucrative sale next summer.

For now, Como have made the first move. Chelsea must decide quickly whether Delap is a project worth holding or a clean break waiting to happen.
