Liberty Lady Flames Secure Late Win Over JMU
LYNCHBURG, Va. – Liberty waited and waited, then pounced.
With the match drifting toward yet another stalemate between these familiar foes, Halle Engle struck in the 82nd minute to deliver a 1-0 home win over James Madison on Thursday night, keeping the Lady Flames perfect at Osborne Stadium this season.
It was a night built on grit as much as flair. Missing starting center back Lauren Littleton, Liberty absorbed a bruising, physical test from JMU and leaned heavily on goalkeeper Ainsley Leja, who turned in a season-high six saves to preserve the shutout.
A cagey battle, a late breakthrough
The first half belonged, narrowly, to the Dukes. They edged Liberty 7-5 in shots and matched the hosts with three efforts on target, asking constant questions of a back line featuring first-time starter Dani Gubbels in the heart of defense.
Still, Liberty refused to crack.
The teams went into the final 10 minutes staring at a familiar script. The last two meetings had finished level, and three of the previous clashes, including a Liberty overtime win in 2019, had been decided by the thinnest of margins. Another draw loomed.
Engle tore it up.
With eight minutes left, the forward timed her run perfectly along the JMU back line. Margaret Garner, trailing the play, spotted the gap and threaded a pass into space. Engle surged onto it, beat the charging goalkeeper to the ball, and slid home the go-ahead goal for her third of the season and the 11th game-winner of her Liberty career.
JMU immediately surrounded the referee, demanding an offside call. After a video review, the goal stood. So did Liberty.
From there, the Lady Flames shut the door. The Dukes managed only one shot over the final eight minutes as Liberty killed the game, managed possession, and saw out a fifth shutout of the season.
Leja anchors, Engle leads
Leja, now 4-1-1 on the year, matched her season best with six saves and continues to post elite numbers: a 0.80 goals-against average and a .806 save percentage. Thursday’s clean sheet marked her third full 90-minute shutout of the campaign and the 24th of her career.
Engle’s decisive finish pushed her to a team-leading three goals on the season. She now sits level on total points with Garner (2 goals, 2 assists) and Avenly Monteith (2 goals, 2 assists), each with six.
Five Liberty players went the full 90 in a performance that demanded concentration and toughness from start to finish. Gubbels, thrust into the lineup in Littleton’s absence, responded with a composed first career start as the reshuffled back line held firm.
The win moves Liberty to 6-2-1 overall, 4-0 at home, and improves its all-time record against JMU to 4-8-2. The Lady Flames have now gone 3-2-2 in their last seven meetings with the Dukes, slowly tilting a once-lopsided series back toward balance.
Next test, bigger stage
Liberty now turns to the final act of its non-conference schedule, hosting Old Dominion (2-4) on Sunday afternoon at Osborne Stadium. The day will carry extra weight: the Lady Flames will honor 11 members of their 2026 Senior Class in a pre-game ceremony before a 1 p.m. kickoff.
With the home record still spotless and the defense stacking clean sheets, the question is no longer whether Liberty can grind out nights like this.
It’s how far that resilience can carry them once the stakes rise even higher.
