Linton Maina Injury Scare for Köln Before Bundesliga Kick-Off

FC Köln’s final week of Bundesliga preparation took a worrying turn on Tuesday as Linton Maina left training in tears, sparking fresh injury fears around one of their standout pre-season performers.

The 27-year-old winger appeared to take a knock to his foot or ankle during a challenge at the Geißbockheim training ground. He tried to shake it off and continue, but the pain clearly wouldn’t let him. Maina eventually sank to the turf, visibly distressed, before club staff stepped in to treat him on the pitch.

For a squad already feeling the strain in wide areas, the sight was the last thing Köln needed.

From cup hero to injury doubt

The scare came barely 24 hours after Maina had underlined his growing importance in competitive action. Introduced from the bench in the DFB-Pokal tie against Würzburg, he changed the game’s rhythm and delivered the decisive moment, setting up Isak Johannesson’s winning goal in a 2-1 victory.

It was the latest example of a pre-season in which Maina has consistently pushed his case. Sharp, direct, and productive, he had played his way into serious contention for a starting spot in Saturday’s Bundesliga opener against Hoffenheim.

Now that place is in doubt.

Coach René Wagner’s reaction told its own story. He immediately broke from the session and followed Maina as the winger, clearly limping, made his way towards the dressing room for further assessment.

Köln’s plans under strain

Within the club, Maina’s potential absence is viewed as more than just a short-term inconvenience. He has emerged as one of the form players of pre-season, a natural candidate to help fill the creative and attacking void left by the €20 million sale of Jakub Kaminski to Benfica.

Köln were already light on natural right-wing options. Losing Maina at the start of the campaign would tighten the squeeze on Wagner’s attacking plans and force an early rethink of his wide structure.

Reports suggest Wagner is hopeful the issue is “only” a shin problem, which could open the door for a rapid recovery in time for the weekend. Until medical checks are completed, though, the full extent of the damage remains unclear and the mood around the training ground tense.

For Maina, the timing could hardly be worse. After an encouraging summer that had finally put him on the brink of a prominent role in Köln’s new Bundesliga campaign, everything now hinges on a scan and a verdict that will shape both his start to the season and the club’s early attacking blueprint.
