Lisandro Martinez Criticizes Manchester United Board After Atletico Defeat

After Manchester United suffered a 2-0 defeat against Atletico Madrid, Lisandro Martinez did not hold back in a live TV interview, sharply criticizing the club's ownership and recruitment strategy. The loss marked another disappointing chapter for Michael Carrick's side, who have only managed two wins in nine matches across all competitions this season.

The match at Wanda Metropolitano was tough from the start as United conceded a goal within the first minute. Despite creating several chances, they couldn't claw their way back. Matters worsened when Leny Yoro received a controversial red card in the 74th minute, followed by Ademola Lookman securing the victory for Atletico.

Pressure mounts on Carrick, whose role as manager appears increasingly uncertain. Yet Martinez’s candid remarks after the game hint that the players might see the root of the problems beyond just the coaching staff.

Martinez Targets Recruitment Team and Club Leadership

Since Sir Alex Ferguson's era ended, no manager has lasted more than two full seasons at Old Trafford. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer held the longest tenure from 2018 to 2021, showing how unstable the position has become. Martinez pointed fingers at the club’s recruitment policies and technical direction following the latest setback. He stated:

"I have to control myself a lot, but sometimes it is a reflection on the club at the moment. We had a fantastic season last season, and now we expect more from the top. We needed more players to compete because many teams bring in other players as well."
"I expect more. Yes, 100 per cent I expected more investment in the summer. I expect more from our technical director, I have to be honest."

When asked about which areas need strengthening, Martinez added:

"I think in general. Last season, we created a base to build an amazing team, but we haven't. He does his best [Carrick], but every season is different. Everyone has learnt how we play and the system. If we don't change, it's a big problem. You can keep changing managers, but what about other areas?"

Wayne Rooney Responds to Martinez's Remarks

Wayne Rooney, appearing on Amazon Prime’s panel during the midweek coverage, voiced his concern that Martinez's comments could harm the team's unity. The former Red Devils star said:

"He's disrespecting his teammates... It's not going to help the situation at the club at the minute."

From an outsider's perspective, Manchester United's troubles seem to stretch beyond the pitch. It remains unclear how the wider squad feels about the turmoil, but long-term followers of the club would likely agree that the challenges run too deep for quick fixes.
