Liverpool's Pursuit of Bradley Barcola: A Financial Earthquake
Liverpool’s pursuit of Bradley Barcola is moving from fantasy to the brink of a financial earthquake.
The 21-year-old Paris Saint-Germain winger has made his intentions clear: he wants Anfield. He wants Liverpool. Inside the club, he is viewed as the No 1 target for the wide positions this summer, the marquee piece in a revamped forward line.
The problem is the price.
A fee to shake the market
PSG, fresh from back-to-back Champions League triumphs and under no pressure to sell, have planted their flag at an eye-watering €170m (£145m). That figure would smash the British transfer record.
Liverpool are ready to go big. Bigger, in fact, than the £125m they paid for Alexander Isak last summer. But there is a line they are not prepared to cross, and right now that line sits below PSG’s £145m demand.
An opening offer is being prepared. The personal side of the deal is not expected to be a battlefield. Barcola is described as “very keen” on the move and excited by Liverpool’s project. Wages, contract length, role in the squad – those are not the obstacles.
This is a negotiation defined by one number: the fee.
PSG’s condition: two in before one out
For weeks, PSG have been clear internally. Barcola does not leave unless two new wingers walk through the door first.
That stance is now being tested.
On Friday, RMC Sport’s Fabrice Hawkins reported that PSG are set to sign Monaco’s Maghnes Akliouche in a €50m deal. Akliouche, who had other options on the table, has consistently prioritised PSG. He is being lined up to replace Kang-in Lee in Luis Enrique’s attacking rotation.
Hawkins added that if Barcola does depart, PSG will move again for another winger, with Ibrahim Mbaye also heading for the exit.
By Saturday morning, Fabrizio Romano had applied his trademark seal. “Here we go” for Akliouche to PSG at €50m, medical pencilled in for next week, contract until June 2031. One winger in. One condition close to being met.
Then came the second piece.
Romano revealed that Mika Godts has given the green light to the PSG project. Talks between PSG and Ajax are underway, with the Dutch club seeking around €60m. Godts is ready to accept personal terms if the clubs can agree a fee, and PSG are described as optimistic.
Akliouche almost done. Godts moving in the right direction. The dominoes PSG insisted on are beginning to wobble.
And that is where Liverpool come back into sharp focus.
Liverpool, PSG and a deal that could drag
Speaking on YouTube in the early hours of Saturday, Romano laid out the state of play on Barcola.
Contacts are ongoing between Liverpool, PSG and the player’s camp. The structure of a contract for Barcola is not seen as a stumbling block. The winger wants Liverpool; Liverpool want the winger. The project appeals to him. The agreement with the player will come.
The sticking point is the number on PSG’s invoice.
Liverpool must decide how far they are willing to go to break their own transfer record again. They know this will require a “significant financial investment”. They know PSG have already lost several attacking players and are still trying to complete other deals.
Timing matters. PSG’s willingness to negotiate seriously over Barcola hinges on locking in those replacements – Akliouche confirmed, Godts advancing. Only once that business is secure will they contemplate letting another important forward walk out of the door.
Nothing is described as imminent. Talk of a bid being “prepared” is secondary to the real battle: finding a figure that satisfies PSG without Liverpool feeling they have overstepped their own internal limits.
The path is clearing. The price remains brutal. Now it comes down to a simple, ruthless question inside Anfield’s boardroom: how much is Bradley Barcola really worth to Liverpool’s future?
