Liverpool Consider Move for Tottenham's Djed Spence
Liverpool are weighing up a move for Tottenham’s Djed Spence, with the defender described as “extremely receptive” to the idea of swapping north London for Anfield – and Spurs already have a price in mind.
Two clubs, two very different summers. Tottenham have moved aggressively, six signings through the door and more planned, particularly in the final third. Liverpool, by contrast, have been far more restrained, with only two additions so far and one of those, Jeremy Jacquet, tied up months ago.
Yet the quiet at Anfield is deceptive. Work is going on, especially in two key areas: the wide positions and a suddenly fragile defence.
Spurs reshape, Liverpool react
Tottenham’s recruitment drive is far from over. Savinho is the priority for the right wing, while a left winger or centre-forward is also on the agenda. Cody Gakpo has emerged as a serious option for Spurs, and Liverpool are understood to be open to a sale if – and only if – a direct replacement is secured.
That search has led them to Paris. Bradley Barcola is currently the main attacking focus, with Liverpool also exploring a move for his PSG teammate Ibrahim Mbaye. The idea is clear: refresh the wide areas, restore depth, and protect themselves if Gakpo does move on.
But it is at the back where the alarm bells are ringing loudest.
Depth is thin. Conor Bradley and Giovanni Leoni are both set to miss the start of the new season, and Joe Gomez has already suffered a muscle injury in pre-season. New head coach Andoni Iraola has not hidden his concern. As reported in late July, he has asked FSG for defensive reinforcements, specifically at full-back.
That request has pushed an old name back to the surface.
Spence ready to jump, Spurs name their price
Djed Spence, the ultra-versatile Tottenham full-back previously flagged by AnfieldIndex as a player Liverpool admire, is now firmly on the radar again. This time, the feeling is mutual.
According to Anfield Sector, Spence “would now jump at the chance” to join Liverpool. Their update on X was blunt:
“Liverpool have an interest in Tottenham defender Djed Spence. Spence is said to be extremely receptive to the idea of a move to Liverpool. Andoni Iraola has defensive concerns around the current right-backs. Not the only name under consideration so no clarity whether progresses but definite interest even if downplayed.”
The information was shared in conjunction with X account @szyexcl, a handle that has built a reputation for being well plugged-in on Tottenham matters. Their message landed at the same time:
“Understand liverpool hold an interest in Djed Spence. Player would be very open to Liverpool if an offer arises. Spurs would seek at least £35m.”
The numbers are clear. Tottenham will talk, but not cheaply. A fee of £35m and above would be required to bring them to the table.
A test of Liverpool’s resolve
For Liverpool, the equation is straightforward but uncomfortable. They need a defender. Their manager wants one. Spence is available, keen, and proven as a flexible option across the back line. Yet the price is hefty for a player who has not yet fully established himself at Spurs.
He is not the only name on the list, and the interest is being downplayed publicly. Inside the recruitment meetings, though, the conversation is sharper: pay the premium for a ready-made solution, or hold out for better value and risk starting the season short?
Tottenham, already plotting attacking fireworks and eyeing Gakpo, may soon find Liverpool knocking on the door for Spence. If that happens, the next move will say plenty about how bold Liverpool are prepared to be in reshaping Iraola’s defence before the real games begin.
