Liverpool Joins Race for Marcos Senesi Amid Tottenham Interest

Liverpool have muscled into the race for Marcos Senesi, turning what looked like a smooth Tottenham deal into a full-blooded Premier League tug of war.

The Bournemouth centre-back is heading for free agency this summer after telling the club he will not sign a new contract. At 28, with three Argentina caps and his best years in front of him, he has become one of the most attractive defensive options on the market.

Strong in the air, sharp in the tackle and comfortable stepping into midfield with the ball, Senesi has quietly built a reputation as one of the division’s most composed left-sided centre-halves. That profile alone was always going to draw interest. His contractual situation has turned it into a scramble.

Tottenham’s lead under threat

Tottenham moved early. Talks were held, and, according to transfer reporter Graeme Bailey, an agreement on personal terms over a move to north London is in place. Under Roberto De Zerbi, Spurs had appeared to be steering this one, positioning Senesi as a key piece in their defensive rebuild.

But nothing is signed.

That gap between agreement and ink on paper has left the door open, and Liverpool have walked straight through it. Matteo Moretto, speaking on Fabrizio Romano’s YouTube channel, confirmed that the Reds have “entered the race quite strongly in recent days”, joining Tottenham and Chelsea in the chase.

Moretto was clear on one point: Senesi wants to stay in England.

His contract expires in June, he will leave on a free, and while there has been interest from Italy, the defender’s intention is to remain in the Premier League. Bournemouth have long known the score; they just haven’t been able to change his mind.

Injuries checked his progress at times on the south coast, but once fit, Senesi has shown the full range of his game in the top flight. That upturn in form has arrived at exactly the moment his contract runs down. The timing could hardly be better for him.

Liverpool’s four trump cards

Tottenham’s groundwork gives them a head start, but Liverpool hold four significant advantages that could yet flip the deal.

  • First, the Anfield hierarchy know the player’s camp well. New sporting director Richard Hughes was the man who brought Senesi to Bournemouth from Feyenoord in 2022. That existing relationship with his agent offers Liverpool a line of trust and familiarity that is often decisive in free-transfer battles.
  • Second, there is the dressing-room pull. Senesi is understood to be close friends with Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister. When a player is weighing up his next move, a trusted voice inside a potential new club can matter as much as any presentation from an executive. The Reds will not hesitate to lean on that connection.
  • Third comes the lure of the Champions League. Liverpool are well placed to offer top-tier European football next season, something Senesi only sampled briefly at Feyenoord. Spurs and Chelsea, by contrast, look at least a year away from being able to guarantee that stage. For a 28-year-old entering his prime, the chance to step straight into those midweek nights carries serious weight.
  • And then there is the bigger picture at centre-back on Merseyside. Virgil van Dijk’s contract runs until next summer and there is a real possibility that the club captain moves on at the end of that deal. Any defender arriving now can see the potential pathway: a season bedding in, then a genuine shot at becoming a first-choice starter at one of the world’s elite clubs.

For a free agent looking not just for minutes but for status, that is a powerful sales pitch.

A crowded Anfield defence – and a clear opportunity

The competition at Liverpool will still be fierce. Ibrahima Konaté is close to agreeing a new contract, which would keep this season’s first-choice pairing together into the new era. Behind them, the club are nurturing highly rated youngsters Giovani Leoni and Jeremy Jacquet, who will both expect chances to impress.

Yet this is exactly the kind of environment Liverpool like to create: no guarantees, but a clear route for those who can handle the demands. Senesi’s blend of aggression and composure fits neatly with that model and answers a tactical need for a left-sided central defender comfortable building from the back.

Chelsea’s interest lingers in the background, and Spurs still have that early agreement on personal terms. But Liverpool’s late surge has changed the temperature of this race. The pull of a familiar sporting director, a national-team friend in the dressing room, Champions League football and a looming vacancy in the heart of the defence add up to a compelling package.

One way or another, Senesi’s decision will say plenty about where he believes his peak years should be spent – and about which of England’s heavyweights truly hold the upper hand in this new phase of the market.
