Liverpool Prepares New Bid for Barcola After PSG's Godts Signing
Liverpool sense their moment in the Bradley Barcola chase – and they look ready to pounce.
The club are expected to submit a new offer for the Paris Saint-Germain winger next week, with confidence growing at Anfield that a breakthrough is finally close after PSG wrapped up the signing of Mika Godts from Ajax.
Liverpool have been locked in drawn-out negotiations for Barcola all summer as they search for another attacking weapon for Andoni Iraola’s front line. The sticking point has been clear: PSG have held firm on a valuation in the region of £145m, a figure that has slowed talks and forced Liverpool to consider whether to walk away.
Reports from The Athletic suggested recently that Liverpool were close to turning to alternative targets. Then came a twist.
PSG confirmed the arrival of Godts in a deal that could rise to around £47m. The 21-year-old winger has signed a five-year contract after a stunning season in the Eredivisie, where he delivered 30 goal contributions in 34 league games. That kind of output does not arrive to sit quietly on the bench.
His signing ramps up the congestion in PSG’s wide areas. Barcola has already been battling for minutes behind Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Desire Doue, and regular starts have been scarce. Godts’ arrival only tightens the squeeze.
Barcola, keen to play more and step out of the shadows, is understood to be open to leaving. The path out of Paris suddenly looks clearer, and Liverpool are said to believe they can now tempt him to Anfield.
Reports in France claim Godts’ move will speed up Barcola’s departure, with Liverpool preparing that renewed bid in the coming days. The timing is no coincidence. The pressure on PSG’s squad, and on Barcola’s role within it, has never been sharper.
Arsenal, though, are still lurking. The Gunners have also been tracking the Frenchman, but some reports indicate they are reluctant to go anywhere near PSG’s lofty asking price. If that stance holds, Liverpool may find themselves with a cleaner run at the deal.
Barcola’s current status at PSG was underlined this week. He remained an unused substitute as the French champions beat Aston Villa 2-1 in the UEFA Super Cup, watching on while fellow summer recruit Maghnes Akliouche started in his place.
For a player already searching for greater responsibility, that kind of evening speaks loudly.
If Liverpool can finally drag this transfer over the line, Barcola would become the second winger to arrive on Merseyside this summer after Victor Munoz. Another wide signing, another injection of pace and unpredictability – and perhaps the clearest sign yet that Liverpool intend to arm Iraola with enough firepower to sustain a title challenge.
