Liverpool's Pursuit of Ajax Star Mika Godts Amid European Competition
Liverpool’s summer rebuild on the flanks is gathering pace – and it may be about to collide head‑on with a European bidding war for one of Ajax’s brightest young stars.
They have already paid £35 million to prise Victor Munoz from Osasuna, beating Newcastle United to the 22-year-old winger. That move was supposed to be only the first piece of a wider reshaping of Andoni Iraola’s wide options. Liverpool also explored an £86 million bid for RB Leipzig forward Yan Diomande, a pursuit that now looks over with the in-demand attacker seemingly bound for Real Madrid.
So the search moves on. And, just as they did with Munoz, Liverpool may again look to outmanoeuvre Premier League rivals – this time for Ajax livewire Mika Godts.
Godts lights up Amsterdam – and Europe takes notice
Godts did not just have a good season last year. He produced the kind of numbers that make recruitment departments across Europe sit up and re-run the footage.
- Seventeen goals.
- Fifteen assists.
- Forty-four appearances.
Those are “superstar” figures for a 21-year-old operating in a league that still prides itself on technical, front-foot football. Ajax leaned heavily on his end product, and he has wasted no time carrying that form into the new campaign.
In the opening stages of the 2026/27 season, Godts has already supplied assists in both of Ajax’s 4-1 wins over Vojvodina in UEFA Conference League qualifying. Different competition, same influence. When Ajax need a spark, he keeps providing it.
That kind of consistency does not stay under the radar for long. Arsenal, Manchester United and Tottenham have all been credited with interest, each of them scouring the market for a wide forward who can score, create and grow in value.
Now Liverpool’s name has been added to the list.
Reports suggest the Merseyside club are monitoring the situation closely, aware that if they want Godts at Anfield, they cannot afford to wait. The race is accelerating.
PSG make the first move
The pressure on Liverpool and their Premier League rivals ratcheted up over the weekend.
Paris Saint-Germain, having already missed out on Diomande, have turned their attention fully to Godts and are understood to have submitted an opening bid. The French champions are reported to have held positive talks over a transfer, with football advisor Luis Campos a strong admirer and convinced the winger fits Luis Enrique’s long-term blueprint at the Parc des Princes.
For Godts, the attraction is clear. Ligue 1 offers a step up in profile and the chance to test himself in a squad packed with attacking talent. He is said to be open to the move, but fully aware that breaking into PSG’s starting XI would be a serious challenge.
Ajax value him at around £51 million. It is a hefty price for a winger yet to play in one of Europe’s top five leagues, but in the current market it also represents a cut-price alternative to the Diomande bracket of deals.
For clubs like Liverpool, Arsenal, United and Spurs, that fee sits in the zone where hesitation can be costly. Wait too long, and PSG might close the door.
Ajax ready to sell – on their terms
Inside Ajax, there is no pretence. Technical director Jordi Cruyff has already gone public: “Godts will leave,” he said over the weekend, “but only at the right time and for the right price.”
It is a familiar stance from a club that has built its modern identity on developing, showcasing and then selling elite talent. The message to suitors is simple: the player is available, but not at a discount, and not on a rushed timetable that suits everyone else.
That puts the onus back on Liverpool and the rest of the chasing pack. They know the numbers. They know PSG have moved first. They know Ajax are braced for an exit.
Liverpool have already shown this summer that they are willing to act decisively to secure their wide targets.
