Liverpool’s Pursuit of Yan Diomande: A Test of Nerve and Patience

Liverpool’s pursuit of Yan Diomande has become a test of nerve, money and patience.

The club remain convinced they will get their man. RB Leipzig remain just as adamant they will not be bullied into a sale. Stuck in the middle is a winger who thought this would all be done by now.

Salah’s heir – and a €100m rejection

Liverpool have identified Diomande as their clear, first-choice successor to Mohamed Salah, whose nine-year spell at Anfield ended earlier this summer. In a market full of possibilities, the Ivorian is the one they have locked onto.

The scale of their intent is already on record. An opening package worth around €100m (£87m, $116m) has been turned down by Leipzig, who are prepared to drag this saga out and, if necessary, drive the fee beyond the Bundesliga record that took Ousmane Dembele to Barcelona in 2017.

Leipzig’s stance is simple: they do not want to sell. Not now, not cheaply, and not on anyone else’s terms.

Liverpool, though, are not walking away.

Frustration in Diomande’s camp

As the talks stall, tension is growing around the player.

Journalist Lewis Steele, speaking on his YouTube channel, described the mood in Diomande’s camp as increasingly impatient.

“I think there’s a little bit of frustration on the player’s side from what I’ve heard that it’s maybe taking a little bit longer than some people may have anticipated,” he said, clarifying that he was talking about the player’s entourage.

They had expected a quicker resolution. Now, Steele says, they are “sort of resigned” to the possibility of the deal dragging on beyond the World Cup, even if they accept that reality. The sense is that, from their perspective, Liverpool could accelerate things if they really chose to.

As Steele put it, Liverpool could “pull their finger out” and have it done within days. For now, that remains hypothetical.

A second bid, and a different kind of pressure

What is not hypothetical is Liverpool’s intention to go again.

Despite spending around £440m (€505m, $600m) on new signings last summer, the club still have significant funds available and are ready to back new manager Andoni Iraola heavily. The recruitment drive is broad: another winger, potentially a striker, a central midfielder, and reinforcements in both full-back positions are on the agenda.

Even so, Diomande sits at the top of the list. The next offer is being described as “very aggressive”, and transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has shed light on how Liverpool are attacking the deal from a different angle.

Romano believes the work on the “player side” has been underplayed publicly. While the headlines focus on the size of the bids, Liverpool have been working for months to secure Diomande’s full commitment and to encourage him, at the right moment, to push Leipzig.

“They are doing excellent work on the player side in order to get the green light and to have Diomande telling Leipzig, ‘let me go to Liverpool,’” Romano said. That, he argues, underpins the confidence inside Anfield that this can still be done.

Club officials have been in close, regular contact with the winger’s entourage since at least December, laying the groundwork for a summer move and constructing a financial package designed to remove any doubt on the player’s part.

Leipzig dig in – and Liverpool raise the stakes

Leipzig, though, are not just bystanders in this.

Romano reports that the German club continue to insist they want to keep Diomande, with a plan built around a new contract, a significantly improved salary and the promise of Champions League football this season. The idea is clear: retain him now, let him shine in Europe, and then give him the freedom to choose his next move next summer from a position of even greater strength.

Liverpool intend to smash through that plan with sheer financial force. Romano is clear: the Premier League club “will be very aggressive” and are ready to bid more than €100m in an attempt to finally shift Leipzig’s position.

Behind the scenes, Liverpool are refining their contract proposal and salary structure for Diomande, working to secure his commitment “100%” before they put their new offer on the table. The hope is that a record-breaking bid, combined with a player who has clearly chosen Anfield, will prove too much even for a reluctant seller.

Alternatives on the radar

Liverpool know there are no guarantees. If Leipzig hold firm and Diomande stays, the club will move to other targets.

A Brighton winger is among the names being monitored, with the player on a growing shortlist. Iraola also has strong admiration for a PSG star who could be available this summer for around £78m (€90m, $102m), a figure that would still represent a major outlay but less than the Diomande package is likely to reach.

For now, though, all roads still lead back to Leipzig and to the Ivorian forward they have ring-fenced as Salah’s heir.

Liverpool are preparing a second, heavier punch. Leipzig are braced and unflinching. The player’s camp is waiting, watching the clock, wondering how long this stand-off can last before someone finally blinks.
