Liverpool Target Ronald Araujo to Strengthen Defense

Liverpool have turned to Barcelona’s Ronald Araujo in a bid to plug growing gaps in Andoni Iraola’s back line, launching a move for a season-long loan for the Uruguay international.

Araujo, 27, offers exactly what Iraola currently lacks: a seasoned defender who can operate both at centre-back and at right-back. He featured 24 times in La Liga last season and remains a regular for Uruguay, a profile that instantly raises the level of Liverpool’s defensive options.

Right now, those options are painfully thin.

• Joe Gomez limped out of pre-season and is expected to miss around a month, ruling him out of the start of the new campaign.
• Giovanni Leoni is still on the long road back from an ACL injury.
• Conor Bradley, earmarked as the club’s right-back of the future, is also not close to returning and could be sidelined for a while yet.

The pressure finally told. As first reported by Fabrizio Romano, Liverpool have moved for Araujo to ease what has become a clear problem area for Iraola before a ball has even been kicked in anger.

The context matters. Ibrahima Konate has already left Anfield for Real Madrid on a free at the end of his contract, stripping away another senior option from the heart of the defence. For a manager who prizes intensity and front-foot defending, the current depth chart has been uncomfortably shallow.

Iraola has not hidden that reality. He has spoken openly this summer about the need for reinforcements, particularly across the back line. When asked specifically about signing a right-back, his answer laid bare the dilemma.

He pointed to Bradley as the long-term solution, stressing that a fully fit, healthy Bradley would have settled the debate. But Bradley is “a little bit far from returning,” as Iraola put it, leaving Liverpool exposed both at right-back and in central defence. The manager described his defensive depth as “very thin” and made it clear the club were actively searching for a solution.

Araujo is that solution, or at least a significant part of it. An experienced head, capable in duels, comfortable defending space and able to slide across the line, he would give Iraola the flexibility to reshuffle without ripping up his plans every time an injury strikes.

Liverpool’s summer work so far has skewed young. They have brought in 20-year-old defender Jeremy Jacquet and forward Victor Munoz, both viewed as players for the future rather than instant mainstays. Jacquet is highly rated inside the club, but he has yet to play for the Reds as his minutes are being carefully managed following his own injury issues.

So the squad stands at a curious crossroads: youthful promise, but short on fit, senior defenders. That is why a loan move for someone of Araujo’s profile makes footballing sense. It patches a glaring short-term weakness without blocking the pathway of Bradley, Jacquet and others in the long run.

Iraola’s first taste of Anfield as Liverpool manager comes this weekend against AS Monaco, a friendly on paper but a sharp test of his evolving side in reality. Whether Araujo is in the dugout by then or not, the message is clear: Liverpool know they cannot walk into the new season light at the back.
