Liverpool's Transfer Window: Late Business Expected Under Iraola
Andoni Iraola is not done with this Liverpool squad. Not even close.
That is the view of former Manchester City financial adviser Stefan Borson, who told Football Insider he expects a flurry of late business at Anfield before the window shuts, with both arrivals and departures still on the cards.
A squad in flux
Liverpool have already moved early in parts. Jeremy Jacquet has finally landed after his pre-contract agreement in February, with Victor Munoz and Ronald Araujo also joining the new era on Merseyside.
But the mood around Anfield is hardly relaxed.
Ibrahima Konate, Andy Robertson and Mohamed Salah have all walked away as free agents. Three pillars of recent seasons, gone for nothing. The holes are obvious, and so is the anxiety about what comes next.
Most of the noise has centred on Bradley Barcola. Liverpool like the PSG winger, but the Champions League winners’ valuation is proving a major obstacle. For now, it’s a staring contest over the fee.
Attention has also turned to Ibrahim Mbaye, who is being viewed as a possible lower-cost alternative to his French teammate. If Barcola proves too expensive, Mbaye could become the realistic route into that profile of attacker.
‘They’re going to buy two or three players’
Borson is convinced Liverpool’s window is only just warming up.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, he outlined what he expects to unfold in the final stretch of the market.
"There's then the clearing. I think you have a sort of clearing situation where the clubs are trying to get rid of their fringe players," he said.
"Liverpool, presumably, are going to start being active in the market. You've got to think they're going to buy two or three players in the last couple of weeks.
"I still think there's a lot of business that's going to get done, but probably on the lower end, the sort of sub-£50million level."
So the headline-grabbing mega-deals may not arrive, but volume is likely. Smart, mid-range signings rather than one blockbuster.
Pre-season warning signs
If the transfer urgency needed any underlining, pre-season has supplied it.
Defeats to Leeds United and Monaco have exposed gaps in Iraola’s squad, both in depth and balance. The performances have hinted at a team still searching for its structure after key exits and new faces bedding in.
The message is clear: this group needs help, and quickly.
Who else could walk out of Anfield?
It’s not just about who comes through the door. The exit list could yet grow.
Tottenham Hotspur hold an interest in Cody Gakpo. Whether they turn that into a formal bid remains to be seen, but the Dutch forward’s name is in the late-window conversation.
Alexis Mac Allister’s situation has also been discussed, his future raised more than once as clubs monitor Liverpool’s reshaping under Iraola.
Then there is Alisson.
The Brazilian goalkeeper had been expected, at one stage this summer, to join Juventus. That move has not materialised, and with the new season just days away, Liverpool would be taking a huge risk by cashing in now. Stability in goal is the last thing Iraola can afford to compromise.
So the clock ticks down, the squad still looks incomplete, and the market continues to swirl around Anfield.
Liverpool will move. The only questions left: how bold, how late, and with what impact on a season that already feels like a crossroads?
