Andy Townsend, former Chelsea midfielder, believes Liverpool should take advantage of the uncertainty surrounding Alexander-Arnold’s role at the Bernabeu. The 27-year-old moved to Spain on a free transfer last summer but has struggled to find his place, leading to calls for a sensational comeback.
“If he came back to Liverpool, would he improve them? One hundred per cent, yes,” Townsend told talkSPORT. “I haven’t really got anyone like Jeremie Frimpong as a right-back. Full-backs are crucial for attacking play nowadays. From what I’ve seen so far, Alexander-Arnold still delivers final balls better than most.”
Townsend also mentioned that some Liverpool fans might find the idea hard to accept, but the player’s quality is undeniable.

The numbers tell a difficult story for Alexander-Arnold’s first season in Spain. Limited by injuries and managerial changes, he started only 14 league matches. This lack of continuity prevented him from building momentum or confidence.
Townsend suggested a loan deal might be the ideal way for Alexander-Arnold to regain form and feel valued again.
“It must have been disappointing for him. If Liverpool can arrange a loan, even for £5million or £10million, they shouldn’t hesitate to bring him back. He’s a top-quality player,” Townsend added.
