Lucas Herrington Sold to Hull City in Record MLS Transfer
Colorado Rapids have sold teenage defender Lucas Herrington to Premier League newcomers Hull City in a club-record transfer that shakes up the MLS market for defenders.
The 18-year-old Australian international moves for a fee reportedly rising to $23 million – $17 million guaranteed – plus a sell-on clause, making it the largest outbound transfer for a defender in league history.
From Brisbane bargain to record sale
Colorado picked Herrington up from A-League side Brisbane Roar FC on a pre-contract in August 2025, a low-key move at the time. The reported fee? Under $1 million.
Less than a year later, he leaves as the most expensive defender export MLS has ever produced.
Herrington’s rise has been rapid and relentless. The center back forced his way into the Rapids’ lineup, earned 2026 MLS All-Star honors, then stepped onto the biggest stage of all with the Socceroos at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, featuring in two matches. Back in league play this season, he posted 1 goal and 1 assist across 20 games for Colorado, anchoring the back line while adding a threat on set pieces.
Rapids president Pádraig Smith didn’t hide the pride inside the club as they confirmed the deal.
“Lucas is a special talent whose elite mentality and character match his outstanding ability on the field,” Smith said. “We are incredibly proud of everything he accomplished during his time with the Rapids and excited for him as he takes this next step in his career.
“Identifying, recruiting, and developing the best young talent, locally, nationally and internationally, is a key part of our club strategy. Our ambition is to help them make an impact and win here in MLS, while creating an environment in which they can reach their full potential. Lucas is a wonderful example of that approach, and we wish him every success at Hull City.”
A kid from Brisbane, a leap to England
For Herrington, this move caps a whirlwind first year away from home.
“When I landed in Colorado in January, I had left Australia for the first time to come across the world and chase a dream. The Rapids and their fans took a chance on me and made me feel at home from day one,” he said.
“I’m grateful to my family, my teammates and coach Matt Wells, and Padraig Smith for believing in me, supporting my growth and giving me the opportunity to take the next steps in my career. To the fans: thank you for embracing a kid from Brisbane as one of your own. Colorado has given me so much, and I’ll always be proud to have been a Rapid. That “next” is Hull City, back in the Premier League for the first time since the 2016-17 season. They clawed their way up by winning the 2025-26 EFL Championship playoff final against Middlesbrough, and now they’re turning to an 18-year-old MLS standout to help them stay there.
Rapids reset under Wells
Colorado, meanwhile, must absorb the loss in the middle of a transitional year.
This is the first season under head coach Matt Wells, the former Tottenham Hotspur assistant tasked with reshaping the Rapids. The team sits 11th in the Western Conference, on 22 points, two shy of the Audi MLS Cup Playoffs line.
A record sale gives them financial muscle. It also leaves a sizeable hole at the heart of their defense.
The club’s strategy, as Smith outlined, is clear: identify, develop, and move on elite young talent. Herrington has just become the flagship example. The question now is whether Colorado can turn that windfall into a squad strong enough to climb above the playoff line without the player who helped put them on the global map.
