He would not be leaving as just another senior pro. He would be walking away as the man who anchored City's Treble in 2023, then ruled Europe with Spain at the Euros a year later. An anterior cruciate ligament injury checked that dominance, but he still flashed his old authority for City last season before returning to full command as Spain’s captain on their way to World Cup glory in the summer.

Now his stock is soaring again. His departure would rip a huge hole straight through Maresca’s blueprint.

The name on City lips all summer has been Bouaddi.

Talks have reportedly taken place with the Lille midfielder, who is thought to be available for around £85m. For an 18-year-old, that fee screams expectation. Bouaddi, for his part, is said to be keen on the move.

He has already shown why. A breakout Champions League display in Lille’s victory over Real Madrid in 2024 dragged him into the spotlight, and he carried that form into this summer’s World Cup, where he impressed again on the biggest stage.

Bouaddi plays as a deep-lying conductor, dictating tempo from the base of midfield in a style that naturally invites comparisons with Rodri. He would slot alongside summer arrival Elliot Anderson, whose game is more box-to-box, and together they could reshape City’s core.

This is not just about replacing Rodri, either. With Bernardo Silva gone, Maresca is trying to rebuild an entire midfield structure. Bouaddi’s 30 Ligue 1 appearances last season hint at a player who already carries more experience than his age suggests. The question is whether City trust a teenager to inherit such a pivotal role.

Maresca’s trusted lieutenant at Chelsea

If there is a favourite in Maresca’s mind, it is Enzo Fernandez.

City have been heavily linked with the Argentine, and Maresca knows exactly what he would be getting after working with him at Chelsea. He rated him so highly he handed him the captain’s armband when Reece James was absent, leaning on him not just as a technician but as a leader.

That leadership is precisely what City stand to lose if Rodri walks away.

There is a problem, and it is a big one: money. Chelsea are expected to hold firm at a £120m valuation, a steep price for a club that have already committed £116m to bring in Anderson. Yet Maresca knows Fernandez better than anyone. No player made more Premier League appearances under him at Chelsea.

Fernandez offers something different to Rodri. He drives forward, makes aggressive runs into the box and constantly looks to hurt opponents with the ball. His numbers back that up: 15 goals and seven assists in 54 Chelsea games last season, while also leading this shortlist for successful passes, passes into the box and completed balls into the final third.

He has only just returned to Chelsea training after helping Argentina reach the World Cup final, where he was sent off in defeat by Spain. Around him, the clock is ticking. Chelsea have set a 17:00 BST Friday deadline for any offers as they try to end the uncertainty before the season starts. They insist they are ready to fully reintegrate him and still see him as a key figure.

If City are serious, they will have to move fast and pay big.

An English engine built for Maresca’s system

Behind the headline names, City have also been looking closer to home.

Alex Scott has emerged as another option, with the Bournemouth midfielder attracting attention across the Premier League. The 22-year-old has turned down new contract offers from the Cherries, yet his current deal runs until 2028 and the club have made their stance plain: they want him to stay.

They have backed that up. Bournemouth rejected a £64m bid from Chelsea last month and warned that further approaches would not be welcome. Arsenal have already had advances knocked back.

Scott’s appeal to Maresca is obvious. His energy, ability to carry the ball and comfort in a possession-heavy system fit the Italian’s philosophy. He drives play forward, threads passes into the box and relishes duels in midfield. He may not yet have the continental shine of Bouaddi or the medal collection of Fernandez, but his profile lines up neatly with what Maresca wants his team to look like.
