Manchester City’s Rodri Faces Uncertain Future Ahead of Community Shield
Manchester City’s plans for the new season have been jolted on two fronts, and both carry the same name: Rodri.
The midfielder, the metronome of City’s treble-winning era under Pep Guardiola and the man Enzo Maresca would have expected to build around, is now highly unlikely to feature in next month’s Community Shield against Arsenal. That in itself would be a blow. The bigger story may be that he could soon be wearing white instead of sky blue.
World Cup hangover, then the knife
Rodri’s summer was always going to be tight. He went all the way to the final day of the World Cup, stretching his season deeper than almost any of his club teammates. His holiday window was pushed back, meaning his return to training was already scheduled for the very week of the Community Shield.
Even if everything else had gone smoothly, his chances of starting at Wembley were slim. Match fitness, rhythm, tactical work under a new head coach – all of it would have been rushed.
City have now confirmed he has undergone minor back surgery. The operation is described as successful, with only a short rehabilitation expected, but it removes any remaining doubt about his involvement against Arsenal. For Maresca, who inherits a side used to Rodri dictating tempo and covering every blade of grass, that’s a tactical headache before a competitive ball has even been kicked.
Real Madrid move from admiration to action
The more seismic development comes from Spain. Real Madrid have opened talks with Manchester City over a move for Rodri, with club president Florentino Pérez giving the green light to pursue the deal.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Madrid have already made contact with City and are prepared to pay more than €50m (£42.8m) to bring the midfielder to the Bernabéu. City, unsurprisingly, are expected to demand significantly more for a player who has been central to their domestic and European dominance.
Romano reports that playing for Real Madrid is Rodri’s long-held dream and that he has been pushing for this move for a long time. That detail changes the dynamic. City anticipate other clubs entering the race, but the player’s preference is clear: he wants Madrid. The Spanish giants know it, and negotiations are now set to intensify.
Arsenal’s view: disruption now, clarity later
From Arsenal’s perspective, the timing is almost perfect. The Community Shield comes too soon for Rodri on every front – physically, logistically, and perhaps contractually. If he remains a City player by then, he is still highly unlikely to start. If he leaves, Maresca will be scrambling to remodel his midfield on the eve of the campaign.
After Wembley, though, the picture changes. Arsenal do not face City in the Premier League until 28 November, with only the possibility of a League Cup fourth-round meeting in October to bring the rivals together earlier. By then, one way or another, Rodri’s situation should be resolved.
Either City will have fought off Madrid and reshaped their project around him once more. Or they will walk into the heart of the season without the man who has been their on-pitch compass for years, forced to prove that even this cornerstone can be replaced.
For Maresca, and for City, the question is stark: is this just a pre-season complication, or the moment the entire structure of their midfield era begins to shift?
