A breakout year on the biggest stages
Bouaddi’s rise has been rapid and ruthless. He announced himself to the wider world in 2024 with a standout display in Lille’s Champions League victory over Real Madrid, a performance that turned heads across the continent and placed him firmly on the radar of Europe’s superclubs.
He then carried that form into the summer’s World Cup, where he started five of Morocco’s six matches in their run to the quarter-finals. On a stage where many teenagers shrink, Bouaddi demanded the ball, dictated tempo and looked at ease against seasoned international midfields.
A conductor for City’s next evolution
City see Bouaddi as a deep-lying conductor, the kind of midfielder who can take the ball under pressure, set the rhythm and open up the pitch with his passing. He is viewed as a stylistic fit rather than a like-for-like Rodri clone, someone who can help evolve the way City build from the back.
He would slot alongside summer signing Elliot Anderson, whose versatility allows him to operate as a box-to-box midfielder or in the number six role he plays for England. On paper, it is a blend of profiles that gives City fresh options: Anderson’s energy and vertical running paired with Bouaddi’s calm distribution and positional intelligence.

For a teenager, Bouaddi already carries the mileage of a seasoned pro. Since making his debut for Lille in October 2023, just three days after his 16th birthday, he has gone on to make 88 appearances for the French club.
He was central to Lille’s strong 2023-24 campaign, helping them finish third in Ligue 1 and re-establish themselves as a force in France and in Europe. That volume of top-level football at such a young age is a major part of the appeal for City, who value players proven under pressure rather than prospects built on promise alone.
