Manchester United and AC Milan meet in Wrocław on Saturday in what feels far more charged than a routine preseason friendly. It’s a reunion, a reckoning, and a final tune‑up all rolled into one.
At the heart of it stands Ruben Amorim.
The Portuguese coach, once billed as United’s long-term visionary, left Old Trafford under a cloud at the start of 2026 after a breakdown in relations with key figures upstairs. His spell in Manchester never caught fire; it fizzled out amid tension and underperformance. Now he resurfaces at San Siro, tasked with dragging Milan back to the top of Serie A after a flat 2025–26 campaign.
Milan, champions four years ago, have watched Inter take control of the city and the title race. Two Scudetti have gone to the Nerazzurri since, and Milan’s most recent league season ended 17 points adrift of the champions in fifth. That gap tells its own story. So does the mood.
Amorim under early pressure
Amorim has barely unpacked in Milan and already the questions are piling up. The preseason form has been grim: no wins in three friendlies and a bruising 3–0 defeat to Chelsea in Jakarta. Supporters are restless. The local media is unconvinced. The benefit of the doubt is in short supply.
He has pushed hard for reinforcements. Milan have already committed around $84 million to bring in Gonçalo Ramos from Paris Saint-Germain, a statement signing meant to spearhead a new era. Amorim still wants more bodies, more quality, more of his own profile in the squad.
But he walks into Wrocław with a team that looks anything but settled. Key men are missing, others are being pushed towards the exit, and the overall picture is one of flux.
Carrick’s United look ready
On the other side, Manchester United arrive with clarity and momentum. Michael Carrick’s work as interim boss has changed the temperature around the club. A third-place finish in the Premier League has restored Champions League nights to the calendar and, with them, a sense of purpose.
Their summer has been sharp. United stayed in Europe and tested themselves against Atlético Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain. The unbeaten run remained intact in midweek with a 1–1 draw against Leeds United. Performances have looked cohesive, the squad structure logical, the mood upbeat.
This is not a club pining for its former manager. If anything, the contrast between the Amorim era and the Carrick reset will be stark on Saturday.
Team news: big returns for United
Carrick is set to welcome back some heavyweight names.
Marcus Rashford is in line for his first appearance since December 2024. United have badly missed his direct running and penalty-box threat; even limited minutes here will matter with the competitive season looming. Lisandro Martínez is also ready to return after the thigh scare that marred his World Cup final. His edge and aggression at the back have been a defining part of United’s recent improvement.
In midfield, the picture has become more crowded. Kobbie Mainoo, back from a quiet World Cup, now finds Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans in the mix after their summer arrivals. Reports in Italy say Christopher Nkunku has been told to find a new club, with Fikayo Tomori, Youssouf Fofana and Santiago Gímenez also on a growing list of expendables. It is a ruthless reset, the kind that can jolt a dressing room or fracture it.
Then there is Rafael Leão. The winger may ultimately stay at Milan this summer, but for now he is out with a muscle injury and is in danger of missing the Serie A opener against Torino. Without him, Milan lose their most explosive outlet.

That usually tells in preseason. United have been solid at the back, measured in possession, and dangerous enough in the final third. Milan, by contrast, have been leaking goals and struggling to impose themselves.
With Rashford and Martínez back in the fold, and with Carrick keen to lay down one last marker before competitive action begins, the English side should have the edge. The emotional undercurrent of facing Amorim only sharpens that focus.
