Rodri twist reshapes the market
United are waiting for clarity on Tchouameni’s status at Real Madrid, but the picture is being redrawn in Catalonia and Manchester. Barcelona have lodged an opening bid for Rodri, a move that could dictate how Madrid handle their own midfield jigsaw.
Real had already started sounding out a deal for the World Cup-winning Manchester City midfielder before Barcelona entered the frame. Now the Catalan club’s push threatens to change everything.
Rodri has a new contract proposal on the table at City, yet he has not hidden the appeal of a return to Spain. At this stage, he is understood to favour a move to Camp Nou over joining Jose Mourinho’s project at Madrid. Manchester Evening News reports that City, while deeply reluctant to lose him, will not block a departure if a buyer meets their valuation.
Barcelona are nowhere near that mark yet. Their first bid, as reported by The Athletic, came in at €45million (£38m) plus add-ons. City want more than £60m. A sizeable gap, but the kind that can close quickly when a player’s preference is clear and a superclub needs a new midfield anchor.
If Barca edge closer to City’s price, Madrid’s need for a marquee holding midfielder eases. If they miss out, the pressure on Carlo Ancelotti’s squad planning spikes — and Tchouameni’s name stays ringed in red ink.
Tchouameni deal drifting from United
United made their interest in Tchouameni known back in April. Background checks were carried out months ago, and the club remain keen to move if Real open the door.
Right now, that door is firmly shut.
Madrid have shown no willingness to cash in on the 26-year-old, who has already agreed terms on a new five-year contract at the Bernabeu. The club have not yet officially announced the deal, a delay that has fuelled whispers and speculation, but not enough to shift their stance.
With Rodri potentially heading to Spain and Real intent on keeping their own cornerstone, any United move for Tchouameni now looks remote. The domino effect of Barcelona’s bid has not helped; if Madrid can solve their midfield with City’s linchpin, their incentive to negotiate over Tchouameni all but disappears.
Another Barcelona blow for United
For United, Barcelona’s latest manoeuvre threatens to become another unwelcome subplot in a window already laced with frustration.
The Catalan club recently declined to trigger the option to sign Marcus Rashford permanently after his successful loan spell last season. The £26m fee on the table would have given United a clean, badly needed injection of funds. Barca walked away. United were left counting the cost.
Now the same club could indirectly block a path to one of their top midfield targets. If Barcelona succeed in prising Rodri away from City, Madrid are under less pressure to reshape their midfield. If they fail, Real are even more likely to cling to Tchouameni as a long-term pillar.
Either way, United’s room to manoeuvre narrows.

The club have already committed £85m on Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans this summer. Add Mason Mount and Kobbie Mainoo to the mix, and Michael Carrick now has four senior midfielders contesting two starting spots.
