Manchester United Set for Cash Boost as Kambwala Moves to Como

Manchester United are set for an unexpected cash injection as Willy Kambwala closes in on a move from Villarreal to Como – and it comes at exactly the right moment for the club’s recruitment team.

The Mirror report that Como have won the race for the defender’s signature, edging out Osasuna, with United quietly positioned to profit in the background. When Kambwala left Old Trafford for Spain in 2024, the deal was carefully constructed: a sizeable sell-on clause, a buy-back option and matching rights for three years were all written in.

Villarreal paid €5.5 million up front with a further €6m in potential add-ons. They are not expected to receive a huge fee from Como this time, but that hardly ends the story. The sell-on clause means United will collect a slice of the final transfer, a small but significant boost to a budget being stretched in the final days of the window.

This is no one-off. It is now a defining feature of the new sporting structure at Old Trafford.

United dabbled with sell-on clauses in the past; under Ineos, they have become non-negotiable. Every outgoing deal is viewed as a future asset, not just a clean break. The sale of Tyler Fredricson to Lausanne-Sport included a high-percentage sell-on clause. Radek Vitek’s move to Middlesbrough carries a clause worth up to 35 per cent. Ethan Williams and Ethan Ennis left for Peterborough and Stockport County with 50 per cent clauses attached.

Each departure plants a financial seed. Kambwala’s move is simply the latest to bear fruit.

Michael Carrick's Perspective

For Michael Carrick, the timing could hardly be better. With the clock ticking on the summer window, any extra funds can be quickly turned into reinforcements.

"I just think we're looking to strengthen the squad," he said. "We're certainly working towards that, making the most of the situation that we have and trying to improve things and trying to move forward. You know, I said the same thing to you last time. So, yeah, certainly trying to make the most of the opportunities to finish the window stronger than we went into it. And I think we're a good way to doing that, so far."

The message is clear: United intend to squeeze every last drop out of this market.

They have limited time to do it. The club are expected to track late openings closely, weighing both permanent and loan options to cover the remaining weak spots in the squad. Margins are thin, and even a modest windfall from a former academy defender can tilt a negotiation.

While United’s recruitment staff scan the market, Kambwala is heading in the opposite direction – literally and figuratively. He will travel to Italy for his medical and to finalise personal terms before stepping into Serie A with Como.

One defender moves on. Another deal somewhere else suddenly becomes possible. Under Ineos, that is exactly how United want the system to work.
