Manchester United Return to Champions League Under Michael Carrick

Old Trafford under the lights. Champions League anthem in the air. Three years after their last appearance, Manchester United are back in Europe’s elite competition, opening their campaign on Thursday night against Azerbaijani underdogs Sabah FK.

Michael Carrick, the former midfield metronome turned head coach, is the man who dragged them back. His third-place finish in the Premier League last season didn’t just restore credibility; it earned him the job on a permanent basis and a shot at proving his ideas belong at this level.

Now comes the first real test of this new era.

Injury puzzles and timely returns

Carrick’s preparations have been shaped by a familiar theme at United: injuries and fine margins.

There is good news. Mason Mount has rejoined full training and could make the squad, a welcome boost for a midfield that has already lost Manuel Ugarte and new signing Carlos Baleba to the treatment room. Mount’s sharpness will be a question, but his presence alone changes the options.

Matthijs de Ligt is edging towards a return as well, nearing the end of a long recovery from a back problem. He is unlikely to be rushed, yet his name back in the conversation underlines the growing depth at centre-back.

The big concern is Luke Shaw. Carrick admitted the left-back is being “managed” after the bruising 2-2 draw at Everton, where Shaw still found the quality to set up Benjamin Sesko’s goal at the Hill Dickenson Stadium. That assist underlined just how important he remains to United’s attacking shape.

Shaw’s uncertainty forces a rethink. If he misses out, one of Diogo Dalot or Noussair Mazraoui may have to switch sides, while teenager Harry Amass – kept at Old Trafford despite late transfer interest – lurks as a bold alternative.

Amad Diallo is set to be out until October with an ankle injury. Baleba, signed from Brighton and Hove Albion, is on a similar timeline. Those absences narrow Carrick’s choices, but they also simplify the likely XI.

Defence: familiar faces, lingering questions

Between the posts, Senne Lammens is expected to keep his place. In front of him, right-back is a straight shootout between Dalot and Mazraoui. Form, fitness and Shaw’s status will dictate who starts where.

At centre-back, De Ligt remains a doubt, so Harry Maguire and Lisandro Martinez are again in pole position after starting together at Everton. Ayden Heaven, who partnered Maguire throughout pre-season, is another option if Carrick wants to rotate or manage minutes. Leny Yoro adds further competition, but the sense is that United will lean on experience for this European opener.

Midfield engine: Mainoo at the heart

The midfield pivot has settled into a clear pattern. Youri Tielemans, one of the summer arrivals, has been paired with Kobbie Mainoo at the base of Carrick’s 4-2-3-1. The balance works: Tielemans dictates, Mainoo knits and presses.

Mount’s return softens the blow of losing Ugarte and Baleba, yet his most likely role here is from the bench as he builds rhythm. Andrey Santos, the £48m signing from Chelsea, is also pushing hard for a first start, adding another layer of competition in the middle.

Carrick has options, but the Mainoo–Tielemans axis looks set to continue, at least for this curtain-raiser.

Attack: big names, big decisions

Higher up the pitch, Bruno Fernandes remains the creative hub in the No.10 role. To his right, Bryan Mbeumo is expected to start, offering direct running and end product that fits neatly with Carrick’s high-tempo style.

The real intrigue lies in how United line up across the front line if Sesko is deemed ready to start. The Slovenian striker, who saw his end to last season cut short by a shin problem, is now “almost at full fitness” according to Carrick. His goal at Everton hinted that he is close to full sharpness.

If Sesko leads the line, Marcus Rashford could be handed a rest. That scenario would likely see Matheus Cunha shifted out to the left flank, giving United a different look in wide areas while keeping their pressing intensity high.

For all the injuries, the starting XI feels relatively straightforward.
