Manchester United Explore Igor Thiago as Striker Plans Await

Manchester United have picked up the phone to sound out Brazil international Igor Thiago, but any major move for the Brentford striker sits behind more pressing business in midfield and at left-back.

Club sources have made it clear: the immediate drive at Old Trafford is to finish the overhaul in the middle of the pitch with a third new midfielder. Only once that piece is in place, and a new left-back is secured, will United seriously turn to the top end of the pitch.

Midfield first, then a left-back

United’s recruitment team remain locked on two core areas. The midfield rebuild, already underway, is viewed as the foundation of the next phase under the current regime. A third addition in that area is the top priority.

From Welbeck to Thiago: United scan the market

United have already glanced across a range of options. There was a brief, exploratory look at bringing academy product Danny Welbeck back to Old Trafford before he committed to Chelsea.

Names such as Ivan Toney and Ollie Watkins have been floated in the wider conversation, but transfer reporter Ben Jacobs has underlined that Brentford’s Igor Thiago remains firmly in the frame and “cannot be discounted”.

Thiago, 25, is coming off a standout season. He struck 22 goals in the Premier League and 25 in all competitions, numbers that propelled him into the Brazil setup and earned him a debut for the national team in 2026. The World Cup proved a harsher stage, where he struggled to replicate his club form despite being given multiple opportunities, but his domestic output has marked him as one of the league’s most dangerous forwards.

For now, that conversation remains at what he described as a normal, early-stage enquiry – an internal discussion followed by a routine player call to gauge conditions around a potential deal. No bid, no formal negotiations, but a clear indication that United see him as a serious option if circumstances align.

There is, however, a major obstacle. “Getting him out this summer will be incredibly difficult,” Jacobs warned, reflecting Brentford’s position and the reality of extracting a prolific, peak-age striker from a Premier League rival.

Zirkzee holds the key

Inside Old Trafford, the hierarchy are not hiding the order of business. Jacobs reiterated that the midfield and left-back deals sit ahead of any striker move in the queue. The club’s budget and squad planning both point the same way.

On top of that, any push for Thiago – or another centre-forward – is likely to depend on Zirkzee’s future. If the Dutch forward remains, United may decide that their resources are better spent shoring up other areas. If he leaves, the equation changes instantly, and that exploratory call to Thiago’s camp could turn into something far more serious.
