Manchester United vs Ipswich: Mount Returns and Tactical Changes
Old Trafford expects a reaction. Manchester United return home on Sunday still nursing the sting of a flat 2-0 defeat at Hull on the opening weekend, and Michael Carrick knows he cannot afford a repeat against newly promoted Ipswich.
The performance at Hull raised alarms: slow in transition, blunt in attack, and short of ideas. This first home game of the season now carries more weight than it should in August.
Mount Returns to the Frame
There is at least one clear lift for Carrick. Mason Mount is back in contention after returning to full training this week, having recovered from the ankle injury he picked up against Paris Saint-Germain in pre-season.
He is unlikely to be rushed straight into the starting XI, but simply having him available changes the picture. United badly lacked creativity and tempo between the lines at Hull; Mount offers both, and his presence gives Carrick a different tool if the game drifts.
Crucially, Carrick emerged from the Hull defeat without any fresh injuries. In a summer disrupted by fitness issues and late arrivals, that matters.
Rashford Pushing to Start
If one change feels inevitable, it is Marcus Rashford. Used only from the bench on opening day, the forward is pushing hard to start against Ipswich and could be the key to injecting pace and directness into a front line that never truly stretched Hull.
Should Rashford come in from the left, Patrick Dorgu is the most likely to drop out. That would leave Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes operating behind Matheus Cunha, with Rashford driving in from wide and Cunha leading the line.
Benjamin Sesko is still short after a shin problem, so Cunha again looks set to start as the central striker.
Midfield Under the Microscope
If the attack misfired at Hull, the midfield came under even harsher scrutiny. Youri Tielemans and Andrey Santos struggled to impose themselves, and United often looked second best in both duels and control.
Kobbie Mainoo is now pressing hard for a recall. Carrick may decide he needs Mainoo’s energy and assurance alongside Tielemans to stabilise the centre of the pitch and free Fernandes to operate higher up, where he can influence the game rather than firefight.
The back line, by contrast, leaves Carrick with far fewer choices. Injuries continue to restrict his options, meaning any tactical tweaks are more likely to come in front of the defence than within it.
Baleba Delayed, Others Still Sidelined
One new face United fans will not see yet is Carlos Baleba. The £70 million signing from Brighton arrived carrying an ankle ligament injury sustained during a pre-season training camp in Austria and is expected to miss “two or three weeks”. His debut will have to wait.
Amad Diallo is also out for “a little bit longer”, while Tom Heaton, Matthijs de Ligt and Manuel Ugarte remain unavailable, trimming Carrick’s options at both ends of the pitch.
Predicted Manchester United XI vs Ipswich
Carrick is not expected to rip everything up, but he does need to send a message. A likely XI looks like this:
Lammens; Mazraoui, Maguire, Heaven, Shaw; Mainoo, Tielemans; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Rashford; Cunha.
Kick-off is at 4.30pm BST on Sunday, August 30, 2026, at Old Trafford.
United need more than a win. They need a performance that convinces their own crowd this season is not drifting before it has even begun.
