Manchester United vs Ipswich Town: Carrick Seeks Response

Manchester United walk into their second Premier League game of the season already under pressure. A 2-0 defeat on the opening day, and not to a heavyweight, but to newly-promoted Hull City, has left a sour taste and a few sharp questions.

Hull, up via the playoffs, made United look like the side feeling their way into top-flight football. Michael Carrick cannot afford a repeat. Not in front of an expectant Old Trafford crowd, and not against another promoted club in Ipswich Town.

This weekend is about response. And he has to deliver it with a squad that looks, on paper, very similar to the one that came up short.

Baleba arrives, but may have to wait

Since that defeat, United have moved in the market. Carlos Baleba has arrived from Brighton and Hove Albion, immediately becoming the most natural defensive midfielder in the squad. It is a signing that speaks to long-term structure as much as short-term damage control.

But the timing is awkward.

Baleba suffered ankle ligament damage during Brighton’s pre-season. The expectation is that he will return to full fitness before the end of September and work individually before joining full sessions. For all the excitement around his arrival, his realistic target is not Ipswich, but Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday, 10 October.

United need control in midfield now. They may have to wait a little longer for the player signed to provide it.

Amad sidelined after training setback

Out wide, Carrick will again be without Amad.

He featured in United’s final pre-season game against AC Milan, but then missed the Hull clash after picking up an injury in training. The setback is not minor: Roundtable understands the winger could be out for up to six weeks.

His projected return? Also Tottenham at Old Trafford on 10 October.

For a side that lacked spark and incision in the final third against Hull, losing a direct, creative option like Amad strips away another layer of unpredictability.

Mount edges back into contention

There is better news with Mason Mount.

The midfielder limped out before the 20-minute mark in the pre-season meeting with Paris Saint-Germain after a knock to the foot. He was later seen leaving the stadium without a limp, but that did not translate into immediate minutes. He missed games against Leeds United, AC Milan and then Hull City.

He was described as “touch and go” for the Hull fixture. Now, Sam Cohen reports that Mount has trained with the squad ahead of Ipswich Town’s visit.

That puts him in the frame for Sunday, 30 August, against Ipswich. If Carrick wants more tempo and movement between the lines, Mount’s availability could change the rhythm of United’s attack.

De Ligt’s long road back

At the back, the wait continues for Matthijs de Ligt.

The Dutch defender suffered a back injury in November 2025 and has not played since, despite early optimism from Rúben Amorim that he could be back after just a week on the sidelines. That proved wildly optimistic.

De Ligt has now been seen back in training with the first-team group. At this stage, though, it looks like the early phase of his rehabilitation rather than a full return to contact and competitive action. Back injuries demand patience, and United know they cannot rush this one.

The tentative target is late October. Until then, Carrick must rely on the existing defensive core that struggled so badly to impose itself against Hull.

Same squad, different standard required

Strip away the transfer noise and medical updates and one truth remains: Carrick is likely to send out a squad against Ipswich that looks much like the one that failed on opening day.

That does not mean he will tolerate the same level of performance.

Ipswich may be newly promoted, but Hull have already shown what happens when United drop their standards against sides with energy and belief. The margin for error is already thin.

The personnel might not change much on Sunday. The intensity has to.
