Manchester United Pursue Liverpool's Vincent Joseph as Academy Rivalry Intensifies
The direct transfer line between Manchester United and Liverpool has been cold for more than 60 years. Senior players simply do not cross that divide anymore. The academies are a different story.
United have not been shy about testing Liverpool’s resolve at youth level. In 2021 they persuaded winger Ethan Ennis to walk away from a contract offer on Merseyside and head down the M62 to Carrington. Ennis is still on United’s books, building his career through loan spells at Doncaster Rovers and Fleetwood Town.
Now, United are circling again.
United move for Vincent Joseph
According to The Secret Scout, Liverpool’s 16-year-old striker Vincent Joseph “looks set to leave” Anfield after being omitted from the club’s latest list of scholars. That omission has jolted the market. It has also opened the door for their fiercest rivals.
The Secret Scout reports that United “hold strong interest” in Joseph, a centre-forward whose blend of physical presence and link-up play has turned heads across youth football. At 16, he already carries the frame and movement of a modern No 9, capable of occupying defenders and bringing others into the game.
The interest is not confined to England. Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund have both sent scouts to watch Joseph on multiple occasions, underlining how far his reputation has travelled at a young age.
Joseph is already an England U16 international and stepped up to the U18 Premier League last season, where he made just two appearances but still managed three goals. That kind of impact in limited minutes is exactly what elite recruiters look for.
“Interesting to see where he ends up. Not many top number 9s around. He will be in demand,” The Secret Scout added, capturing the sense that this is a rare profile in a market short on genuine centre-forwards.
If United succeed in prising Joseph away, it would be another symbolic blow in the ongoing tug-of-war between the two clubs’ academies, and a reminder that the rivalry now runs as fiercely through youth recruitment departments as it does on the pitch.
Chelsea’s Josh Acheampong also on United radar
Joseph is not the only teenager drawing admiring glances from Old Trafford.
United and Bayern Munich are also understood to be among the clubs tracking Chelsea defender Josh Acheampong. The 20-year-old, a towering presence at the back, has emerged as one of the standout defensive prospects in Chelsea’s system.
Reports relayed by The Peoples Person claim Acheampong has landed firmly on United’s radar. His size, athleticism and defensive instincts fit the profile of the modern centre-back coveted at the top of the game.
Chelsea, though, have taken a hard line. The London club are believed to have rejected approaches from several unnamed sides and view Acheampong as “untouchable” at this stage. That stance underlines both his potential and Chelsea’s determination not to repeat past mistakes in allowing elite academy talent to slip away.
INEOS plan: marquee names and tomorrow’s stars
Much of the noise around United since Champions League qualification has centred on INEOS and the pursuit of marquee signings. Big names, big fees, big statements.
Yet the pursuit of Joseph and the monitoring of Acheampong tell another story. United’s hierarchy are clearly intent on rebuilding the club’s talent base from the ground up as well as from the top down, stocking the academy with high-ceiling prospects who can grow into first-team roles or major assets.
In an era where elite strikers are scarce and powerful young defenders are gold dust, United’s willingness to battle Liverpool, Chelsea, Bayern and Dortmund for teenagers speaks volumes. The question now is simple: who wins these quiet transfer fights that could shape the next decade?
