Manchester United Pursue Lyon Star Moreira for Summer Move
Manchester United’s search for a long-term solution on the left wing has taken them to Lyon, where 21-year-old Moreira has gone from quiet arrival to headline act in less than a season.
According to A Bola, United are weighing up a summer move for the Portuguese winger, whose rise in France has been as sudden as it has been emphatic. Lyon paid just €2 million to sign him from Sporting B on July 22, at a time when his market value hovered around €400,000. Nine months on, that figure has exploded.
He was never meant to be fast-tracked. Moreira arrived as a project, someone to polish behind the scenes while more established names carried the weight of expectation. Then Malick Fofana suffered a serious autumn injury, and Lyon’s plans were ripped up. The youngster was thrown into the starting XI and told to sink or swim.
He swam.
Stationed predominantly on the left flank, Moreira has become a fixture in Lyon’s attack, logging 2,103 minutes across 35 games in all competitions. The numbers tell their own story: four goals and eight assists in 25 Ligue 1 outings, two goals in seven Europa League matches, and another two in three Coupe de France appearances. It is not just a purple patch; it is sustained, multi-competition output from a player who only turned 19 on March 19, 2005.
That kind of breakout season does not go unnoticed. Scouts from Serie A and the Bundesliga have joined United in tracking him closely, with several top clubs on the continent monitoring his progress and his temperament under pressure. What began as a quiet piece of business by Lyon has turned into one of Europe’s more intriguing transfer subplots.
Lyon, though, are in no mood to cash in easily. The club see Moreira as a cornerstone of their next cycle and are described as determined to keep hold of their new star. He is already tied down to a long-term deal running until June 30, 2029, and the French side are expected to hand him a one-year extension as a reward for his impact and to further strengthen their position at the negotiating table.
His market value is now estimated at around €10 million (£9m/$12m), but any club hoping to prise him away should expect a far steeper asking price. Lyon know exactly what they have, and they also know they will not be the only ones profiting. Sporting, who sanctioned his move last summer, inserted a 20% sell-on clause into the deal. Any major transfer now would send a sizeable windfall back to Lisbon.
For United, the equation is clear. Their revamped recruitment structure is built around younger, high-upside profiles who can grow into central roles at Old Trafford. Moreira fits that template almost perfectly: young, technically sharp, already producing in a major European league and comfortable under the glare of domestic and continental competition.
The question is not whether he suits United. It is whether United move quickly enough.
With the summer window approaching, hesitation could prove costly. Rival clubs in Italy and Germany are already circling, and Lyon hold every major card: a long contract, a rapidly rising asset, and no urgent need to sell. Any bid from Old Trafford will have to be both decisive and convincing, not just in financial terms but in the project they can offer a winger whose stock is climbing by the week.
If United truly see Moreira as the answer to their long-standing issues out wide, this is not a chase they can afford to lose.
