Manchester United Turns Attention to Manu Kone After Tchouameni Contract
Manchester United are preparing to turn back to Manu Kone as their midfield solution after hopes of landing Aurelien Tchouameni were effectively shut down by Real Madrid.
The dream died quickly.
On Thursday night, news broke in Spain that Tchouameni had agreed a new contract at the Bernabeu, ending United’s pursuit of the player many at Old Trafford viewed as the perfect successor to Casemiro. The France international, who wrestled that very role from the Brazilian in Madrid back in 2022, had been regarded internally as the ideal anchor for the next phase of United’s rebuild.
There had been genuine optimism in Manchester that Madrid might be tempted into a sale. The European champions have been heavily linked with big-money midfield moves of their own, including interest in Rodri and Enzo Fernandez, and the sense around the market was that someone would have to make way.
Then came Jose Mourinho.
After talks with the returning Madrid coach, Tchouameni committed his long-term future to the club. Any window of opportunity for United slammed shut in an instant.
The twist here lies with the player’s representative. Tchouameni’s agent also looks after Manu Kone, and there is a growing feeling that the interest from Old Trafford helped strengthen the Frenchman’s hand in negotiations with Madrid. Even so, some well-placed voices maintain a move to United was not entirely fanciful, had Madrid decided to cash in.
Instead, the focus has shifted to the other client.
From Tchouameni to Kone
United’s recruitment team, now working under the INEOS-led structure, have pivoted towards Kone, who shared a World Cup dressing room with Tchouameni and offers a similar blend of physical presence and technical quality.
According to TEAMtalk, United are now “plotting a move” after being made aware of Roma’s stance: the Italian club value the 25-year-old at around £50 million.
Roma’s situation has opened a door.
Despite securing a comfortable third-place finish in Serie A and a return to the Champions League, I Giallorossi still need to sell. The club are under pressure to comply with UEFA’s financial regulations and see Kone as their most valuable saleable asset.

Sources cited in the piece suggest Kone could be available for a fee in the region of £50 million, with intermediaries already holding conversations not only with United but also Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Liverpool as they test the Premier League market.
United, crucially, appear to have encouragement from the player’s side. Previous reporting relayed by The Peoples Person indicated Kone is “very keen” on a move to Old Trafford, and his profile reads like a checklist for English football: powerful in duels, aggressive without the ball, and a strong carrier through midfield.
At 6'1", he brings the kind of athleticism that can rip through pressing lines and turn defence into attack in two or three strides. An impressive World Cup campaign has only sharpened the spotlight, with the midfielder described as having showcased the blend of physicality and technical quality that has drawn admirers across Europe.
Deschamps’ template, United’s logic
One detail will not have been lost on United’s analysts.
In France’s 3-0 win over Iraq in the World Cup group stage, Kone started in place of Tchouameni, who missed out with an adductor injury. Didier Deschamps trusted Kone to mirror the role of Madrid’s midfield lynchpin, and that substitution pattern appears to have resonated at Old Trafford.
If Kone is good enough to be Tchouameni’s stand-in for France, the thinking goes, he can be Tchouameni’s alternative for United.
TEAMtalk also report that INEOS have been made aware of another potential opportunity at Madrid: Eduardo Camavinga. Even so, Kone is viewed as a “serious option” to reinforce Michael Carrick’s engine room, both in terms of cost and availability.
United wanted Tchouameni. They may end up with the man Deschamps turned to when Tchouameni was unavailable.
If Roma are forced to sell and Kone’s admiration for Old Trafford holds firm, this could be the midfield decision that shapes United’s next era.
