Manchester United's £80m Midfield Overhaul Under Carrick
Manchester United’s rebuild under Michael Carrick is accelerating, and it comes with a hefty price tag.
With Champions League football returning to Old Trafford next season, United are pushing ahead with an aggressive midfield overhaul that could see them commit around £80million to their next major target.
Carrick’s midfield reboot
The first piece of the plan appears to be in place. United have reportedly struck a £38.8m agreement with Atalanta for Brazilian midfielder Ederson, a deal that would give Carrick fresh energy and bite in the centre of the pitch after Casemiro’s departure left a glaring hole in the spine of the team.
Casemiro’s exit has not only removed experience and presence from United’s midfield, it has exposed how thin the squad looks in high-stakes games. Carrick, who built his own playing reputation on control and composure in that area of the pitch, is determined not to head back into Europe underpowered.
So one new midfielder isn’t enough. United want another.
United move for Mateus Fernandes
The focus has now turned to West Ham playmaker Mateus Fernandes, with United already making contact over a potential deal for the 22-year-old.
ESPN report that United have approached the relegated club as they explore a move for Fernandes, who impressed in his debut season at the London Stadium and quickly drew admiring glances from the Premier League’s elite.
West Ham’s drop out of the top flight has left them braced for a summer of sales. Relegation is forecast to cost the club around £100m, a financial hit that almost guarantees tough decisions over key assets. Fernandes is at the front of that queue.
According to The Times, West Ham have placed an £80m valuation on the Portugal international. It is a figure that underlines both how highly they rate him and how desperate they are to protect their position in negotiations.
United are not alone in the chase. Arsenal have also been linked with a move, attracted by Fernandes’ blend of creativity and composure in tight spaces. His first year in England showcased a player comfortable taking responsibility, even in a struggling side.
For United, pairing Fernandes with Ederson would represent a dramatic reset in midfield: two fresh faces, two different profiles, and a clear sign that Carrick wants a more dynamic, technically secure engine room as he steps into his first Champions League campaign as United manager.
The question now is simple: will United meet that £80m asking price, or risk losing another top target to a domestic rival?
Maguire’s new stage
While Carrick and the recruitment team work through the summer’s transfer battles, one of United’s senior figures is preparing for a very different role.
Harry Maguire, omitted from Thomas Tuchel’s England squad for the upcoming World Cup, will not be spending the tournament in silence. Instead, he is set to join Gary Lineker, Alan Shearer and Micah Richards on The Rest is Football podcast throughout the competition.
The former England internationals will be based in a studio overlooking Times Square in New York, recording 40 episodes as they dissect the drama on and off the pitch. Maguire, still very much an active player, will bring a current dressing-room perspective to a show already known for its mix of insight and humour.
His absence from Tuchel’s squad marks a second successive major tournament without him on the pitch, after injury ruled him out of Euro 2024. This time, he arrives fit but overlooked, a stark reminder of how quickly international careers can shift.
So Maguire adapts. If he cannot marshal a back line for his country this winter, he will instead analyse those who do, from one of the most iconic backdrops in the world.
While United chase midfield reinforcements and prepare for Europe, one of their most scrutinised figures will be watching the global game from a studio high above Times Square. How long before he is back at the centre of the conversation on the pitch as well as behind the microphone?
