Manchester United Faces PSG: Tielemans Set for Debut
Manchester United will unveil one of their marquee summer signings in Gothenburg this weekend, but Michael Carrick will have to do without two important figures against the Champions League holders.
Youri Tielemans is in line to make his first appearance for the club when United face Paris Saint-Germain at the Nya Ullevi Stadium on Saturday, with Bruno Fernandes also back in the fold. Senne Lammens and Matheus Cunha, though, have been ruled out.
Tielemans era begins
Tielemans only linked up with United last week after a post-World Cup break, having helped Belgium reach the quarter-finals in North America. The midfielder has taken the scenic route to Old Trafford – Anderlecht, Monaco, Leicester, Aston Villa – and now, at 29, he walks into the heart of Carrick’s new project.
United paid around £35million to prise him from Aston Villa last month, handing him a five-year contract that runs until 2031. This is not a short-term patch; it is a statement that Tielemans is expected to shape United’s midfield for the long haul.
He sat out the 2-1 win over Atletico Madrid in the Snapdragon Cup at Stockholm’s Strawberry Arena, where a second-half brace from Bryan Mbeumo turned the game. This time, there will be no watching brief. Tielemans has been named in a 22-man travelling squad and is expected to feature against the back-to-back European champions.
The stage, the opponent, the timing – all of it feels deliberate. Carrick’s first pre-season with full authority, PSG on the other side, and a new conductor ready to take the baton.
Fernandes returns, but key duo stay home
Alongside Tielemans, United’s captain is back. Bruno Fernandes reported this week after his own World Cup break and is in contention to play, joined by Portugal team-mate Diogo Dalot, Brazilian forward Matheus Cunha and Morocco defender Noussair Mazraoui.
Yet Cunha, despite rejoining the group, will not be involved against PSG. Nor will first-choice goalkeeper Lammens, who returned to training on the same day as Belgium colleague Tielemans.
United have confirmed that both players will remain at Carrington to “fully recover from non-related minor illnesses”, with the expectation that they will be back with the squad during next week’s training camp in the Republic of Ireland. A precaution, not a crisis, but a disruption all the same.
For Carrick, it means reshuffling his options at both ends of the pitch against elite opposition.
Goalkeeping department stretched thin
Lammens’ absence comes at an awkward moment. New signing Karl Darlow is also unavailable, while Altay Bayindir and Radek Vitek have departed for Celta Vigo and Middlesbrough respectively.
The result is a stripped-back goalkeeping group: veteran Tom Heaton as the senior figure, backed up by Dermot Mee and teenager Fred Heath. It is an honest snapshot of pre-season reality – an experimental bench, a veteran starter, and two youngsters suddenly pushed closer to the spotlight.
Striker Benjamin Sesko remains sidelined with a shin injury that has carried over from last season, adding to the sense that United’s attacking options are not yet at full power.
At the back, Matthijs de Ligt is still not ready to return from a long-term back problem. Kobbie Mainoo, Marcus Rashford and Lisandro Martinez are also absent, all still on post-World Cup holidays and due to rejoin in Ireland.
Youth reshuffled as Carrick trims the group
The Atletico win in Stockholm gave a glimpse of the future when 15-year-old JJ Gabriel came off the bench for his senior debut. He will not be involved this weekend, with Carrick tightening his squad for a higher-calibre test.
Fellow youngsters Jim Thwaites, Jaydan Kamason and Ethan Williams also drop out of the group that faced Atletico. Heath steps in for Bayindir, while several promising names keep their places: Harry Amass, Dan Armer, Jack Fletcher, Tyler Fletcher and Shea Lacey all travel.
Joshua Zirkzee, heavily linked with a summer exit, is also included again. For now, he remains part of Carrick’s attacking options and will have another chance to stake his claim against top-level opposition.
Carrick’s first full campaign takes shape
The PSG clash is more than a glamorous friendly. It sits at the heart of a carefully structured pre-season that is designed to ease Carrick’s squad towards his first Premier League campaign as permanent manager.
After Gothenburg, United head to a training camp in Ireland, where Lammens and Cunha are expected to rejoin. That trip culminates in a meeting with rivals Leeds at Croke Park in Dublin on August 12, before the summer schedule wraps up against AC Milan in Wroclaw, Poland, on August 15.
Then comes the real thing.
United open their league season away to Championship play-off winners Hull on August 22, a quietly awkward assignment that will test how quickly Carrick’s ideas – and Tielemans’ influence – have bedded in.
For now, though, the focus is clear. A new midfield signing ready to pull on the shirt for the first time. A captain back to lead. A goalkeeper and a forward kept at home to recover. A stretched but intriguing squad heading into battle with Europe’s champions.
