Manchester United's Pursuit of Tchouameni: A Midfield Dream
Manchester United’s midfield rebuild has kicked into gear, but the signing Michael Carrick truly craves remains out on the horizon.
United have already moved decisively, bringing in Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans to inject fresh energy and craft into the centre of the pitch. Those deals have jolted their summer into life, yet inside Old Trafford there’s no illusion: this squad is still short if it wants to live with Manchester City and Arsenal across a 38‑game season and make a serious dent in the Champions League.
Carrick’s vision is clear. He wants a side that can finish in the top two or three in the Premier League and go toe‑to‑toe with Europe’s best. To do that, he knows he must replace the presence and authority that walked out the door with Casemiro.
Right now, everything points back to one name.
United circle again for Tchouameni
Aurelien Tchouameni has been the long-term fantasy in United’s recruitment meetings: a dominant holding midfielder who can anchor a team and elevate those around him. Until recently, that dream had no real-world route. Real Madrid have treated the Frenchman as a cornerstone of their future, not a trading chip.
But the landscape in Madrid is shifting.
Real are now expecting to land Manchester City’s midfield metronome and World Cup Golden Ball winner Rodri. The Spain captain, fresh from leading La Roja to the ultimate prize, is understood to be keen on a return home. His journey from Atletico Madrid to Villarreal and then City has not dulled his appeal at the Bernabeu, and any old capital loyalties are unlikely to get in the way.
That single move would send shockwaves through two elite midfields at once. City stand to lose arguably their most important player. Real, by contrast, would suddenly have an embarrassment of riches at the base of midfield.
And that is where United sense a sliver of opportunity.
Rodri’s arrival could squeeze Tchouameni’s minutes, or at least his status, just enough to change minds in Madrid. According to Simply Utd, Real are now “open to a sale” of Tchouameni, provided any bid matches their valuation – and that figure is expected to be eye-watering. United, for their part, have made fresh contact to test the waters.
The club’s interest does not end there. Eduardo Camavinga is also admired at Old Trafford, and there is a suggestion that Real might be more inclined to part with him than with Tchouameni. At this stage, though, that remains speculation rather than a live negotiation.
A dream signing collides with harsh numbers
Inside United, nobody is hiding how highly Tchouameni is rated. The Manchester Evening News’ Samuel Luckhurst Railston reported this week that a club source described the Frenchman as a “dream” signing, the kind of player they would move for instantly if the numbers ever made sense.
Right now, they do not.
Speaking from Trondheim over the weekend, that United source was adamant a deal is “not currently realistic” because of the cost. The internal belief is stark: even if Real Madrid decide to cash in, the asking price would likely sit beyond what United can realistically pay in this window.
The stance is simple. If Madrid send the right signals on a fee, United will be at the table and ready to bid. Until then, Tchouameni remains more ambition than expectation.
So Carrick waits. His midfield rebuild has begun, but the cornerstone piece – the Casemiro successor, the dominant shield in front of his defence – is still out of reach, for now.
If Rodri does walk through the doors of the Bernabeu, the equation changes again. The question for United is whether that change will ever bring Tchouameni within financial range, or whether their dream signing will stay exactly that.
