Manchester United’s summer rebuild is not finished yet, and the club’s recruitment team may have just found their next centre-forward in a rain-soaked corner of Lviv.
On Monday, Shakhtar Donetsk’s 20-year-old striker Kaua Elias produced the sort of performance that makes notebooks snap shut and phones light up. A perfect hat-trick – left foot, right foot, header – in a 5-1 demolition of Kudrivka, delivered in front of representatives from some of Europe’s most demanding clubs.
United were there. So were Arsenal. AC Milan and Porto are circling too. The race has started.
A hat-trick that changed the temperature
Elias didn’t just pad the scoreline; he set the tone. His treble sparked Shakhtar’s rout in Lviv and, according to reports, crystallised opinions that had been forming over recent months inside Old Trafford’s scouting department.
Those scouts had already pored over his recent games. This was the live audition. The verdict that went back to Manchester described a forward with the “potential to develop into a top-level centre-forward” and, crucially, one “highly compatible with United’s press-heavy, fast-transition system”.
That last part matters. United’s recruitment under Michael Carrick has focused on players who can handle high-intensity work without losing their edge in possession. Elias, by those internal assessments, ticks the right boxes.
Shakhtar know it. They are said to value him at around £30 million, and with several heavyweights now at the table, they have little reason to blink.
From Brazil to the shop window
Elias only joined Shakhtar from Fluminense in 2025, but his adaptation has been sharp. Twelve goals and three assists in 39 appearances is not yet elite output, yet for a 20-year-old in a new environment it is more than enough to attract serious attention.
His camp has already received “concrete signals” from interested clubs, with Milan’s hierarchy reported to be weighing up a bid of their own. Porto, with their track record of developing and flipping South American forwards, are also in the mix.
Elias, for his part, is understood to be open to a move into one of Europe’s top leagues. The question now is who moves first – and who blinks at Shakhtar’s valuation.
United’s need up front
At Old Trafford, the timing is awkwardly perfect. Carrick’s squad is light at centre-forward. Benjamin Sesko stands as the only recognised out-and-out striker in the senior group, and that fragility in depth is hard to ignore as the season looms.
Joshua Zirkzee is expected to depart, with Juventus pushing to take him to Serie A. If that deal goes through, the gap up front becomes a chasm.
United have already acted decisively in midfield. Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans have arrived to reshape the centre of the pitch, adding legs and control. The spine, though, still needs a focal point at the top end.
Recruitment plans reflect that. With weeks left in the window, United are exploring options for a third midfielder, a full-back and, critically, a striker. Elias has moved from name on a list to live target.
Competing agendas, crowded market
United will not have a clear run at this. Arsenal have tracked Elias for several weeks and are no strangers to investing early in emerging talent. Their model, like United’s, leans heavily on forwards who can press, combine and stretch the pitch.
Milan, rebuilding their own attack, offer a different kind of project and a league that has long been kind to young strikers. Porto, meanwhile, present a proven stepping stone for Brazilians into the European elite.
Shakhtar, as ever, sit in a position of strength. A 20-year-old Brazilian striker, scoring hat-tricks in front of Premier League and Serie A scouts, is exactly the kind of asset they are used to monetising on their terms.
Moving parts at Old Trafford
The pursuit of Elias comes as United continue to reshape their squad elsewhere. On Friday, goalkeeper Altay Bayindir left for Celta Vigo on an initial loan, with the La Liga club holding a £3.5m option to make the move permanent.
Pieces are moving, money is being freed, and the squad is being trimmed with purpose. The search for a striker sits at the heart of it all.
United’s scouts have delivered their verdict on Kaua Elias. The data checks out, the live viewing has added conviction, and the price – while significant – is not out of step with the modern market for a 20-year-old with his profile.
Now comes the hard part. Do United turn admiration into a formal offer before a rival does, or risk watching another potential long-term No.9 slip into someone else’s colours?
