Manchester United Target Barcelona's Alejandro Balde for Left-Back Role

Manchester United have turned their attention to Barcelona full-back Alejandro Balde as they step up plans to recruit a new left-back, according to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano.

The La Liga champions find themselves facing a delicate decision. Balde, once seen as a long-term pillar on the left, is coming off a difficult, injury-hit 2025/26 campaign that stalled his momentum and opened the door to competition for his place.

That competition now has a name. João Cancelo.

Hansi Flick leaned heavily on the Portuguese defender in the second half of last season, and Cancelo’s permanent return this week has pushed Balde closer to a supporting role. If the hierarchy at Barcelona stick with Flick’s pecking order, the 20-year-old could be staring at a year as second choice.

That is where United enter the picture.

Romano reports that the Premier League club have made Balde their “next priority” after wrapping up a deal for Carlos Baleba, with internal discussions now turning firmly to the left-back position. United have already held talks with Balde’s camp in recent days to gauge whether a departure from Barcelona is realistic and on what terms a move might be done.

The interest is serious. The deal is not. Not yet.

Barcelona are understood to be open to a sale at the right price, a stance shaped by both finances and squad balance after Balde’s stop-start season. But one key factor could complicate United’s pursuit: the player’s own stance.

Despite the uncertainty, Balde is described as happy at the Spotify Camp Nou. He has not agitated for a move and still sees a future in Catalunya, even with Cancelo ahead of him for now.

So United wait, watching a situation that could easily shift with one injury, one tactical tweak, or one decisive offer.

For now, Balde remains a Barcelona player, Cancelo keeps the shirt, and Old Trafford’s search for a new left-back stays very much alive.
