Manchester United’s midfield rebuild has a new frontrunner – and he plays in red and black on the south coast.
Alex Scott, one of Bournemouth’s standout performers and among the most highly rated young midfielders in the Premier League, has emerged as United’s preferred target for the summer window, with the club refusing to close the door on a move despite an £80 million valuation.
United stay in the hunt
United have explored a range of midfield options in recent weeks and held talks over a possible deal for Scott. Bournemouth, though, are under no pressure to sell and are pushing to extend the 20-year-old’s contract.
According to reporter Samuel Luckhurst, United have not ruled out making a bid. The price is steep, the interest is not. Scott remains firmly on their list.
Bournemouth’s stance is clear: they want to keep him and are working on a new deal that is expected to include a release clause. That would protect their asset and set a clear benchmark for any future negotiations.
For now, United are still in the race.
From missed targets to a must-win battle
Scott’s rise to the top of United’s shortlist comes after they missed out on two other midfielders, Elliot Anderson and Mateus Fernandes, both of whom commanded significant fees from Tottenham and Manchester City respectively.
United stepped back from those deals, unwilling to match the numbers others were prepared to pay. The strategy is obvious: smarter, more disciplined recruitment, not another summer of overpaying out of desperation.
But there is a line. They cannot keep walking away.
Midfield remains a priority position. The club want at least one new arrival in that area before the window closes, and the list of alternatives is long. Scott, though, has moved to the front of the queue.
The £80m question
Bournemouth value Scott at around £80m, a figure that reflects both his potential and his importance to Andoni Iraola’s side. It is a Premier League price for a Premier League-proven talent, and it forces United into a familiar dilemma.
Do they hold their nerve again and risk watching another target disappear? Or do they finally commit serious money to a player they believe can anchor their midfield for years?
The pressure is building. United want to be shrewd, not soft. They want to avoid repeating past mistakes in the market, yet they also know that waiting too long can be just as costly as overpaying.
At some point, they have to push the button on someone.
