Manchester United U19s Dominate Sabah FK 5–0 with Gabriel Hat-Trick
Manchester United’s U19s tore into their UEFA Youth League campaign on Thursday afternoon, dismantling Sabah FK 5–0 at Leigh Sports Village in a performance as one-sided as the scoreline suggests.
With the competition mirroring the first team’s Champions League group stage, United’s youngsters — led by the club’s U21s manager in charge of this makeshift U19 group — wasted no time announcing themselves.
Lightning start
Two minutes. That’s all it took.
Jim Thwaites whipped in a wicked free-kick from wide on the right, and Amir Ibragimov darted across the near post to glance the ball home. Sabah barely had time to settle; United were already in front and hunting more.
JJ Gabriel almost doubled the lead moments later. Picking up the ball on the edge of the box, he unleashed a fierce drive that the Sabah goalkeeper did superbly to tip over.
Sabah could hardly get out. When they did, it was through the tireless running of Shahin Ibrahimov, who tried to burst clear on the counter. Each time he surged forward, though, red shirts swarmed around him. No support, no shots, no relief.
The pressure finally told again in the 16th minute. Bendito Mantato’s cross skipped all the way across the area, and Jacob Watson arrived to strike it in with his weaker right foot. United were 2–0 up and cruising.
Their only setback came on 20 minutes. In his first start of the season, Godwill Kukonki rolled his ankle and had to come off, with Rafe McCormack sent on in his place.
United didn’t slow. Just before the interval, they struck again. Junior Brown’s effort inside the box was blocked, but the loose ball fell kindly to Gabriel, who reacted quickest to slam it in. Three goals, near-total control, and Sabah pinned in their own half. The whistle brought only brief respite.
Gabriel takes over
The second half followed the same script: United attacking, Sabah clinging on.
Brown almost produced the goal of the afternoon when he cut in from the left and bent a curling effort towards the top-right corner, only for the Sabah keeper to fling himself across and pull off a stunning save.
United kept coming. Shots rained in from all angles, but the fourth goal took its time. When it arrived late in the half, it belonged to Gabriel again. Inside the box, he coolly sidestepped his marker and passed the ball into the far-right corner with the composure of a seasoned striker.
Sabah were done. United were not.
Thwaites, already influential from set pieces, then split the visiting backline with a superb through ball. Gabriel raced in behind, held his nerve and finished to complete his hat-trick and round off a 5–0 rout.
By the end, the numbers were brutal: United racked up 44 attempts on goal. Sabah didn’t manage a single effort against Cameron Byrne-Hughes.
