Marc Cucurella’s long wait in white finally ended under the floodlights in Gelsenkirchen.
The Spanish defender pulled on the Real Madrid shirt for the first time in the club’s pre-season win over Schalke 04 at the Veltins-Arena, stepping off the bench in the 61st minute to begin what he hopes will be a long run in the side. "I am very happy," Cucurella admitted, the relief obvious between the lines. "I think it was a great match for everyone and a great result before starting the League. These were my first minutes, and I’m very eager. The wait was long, but now, little by little, I’m getting into rhythm and looking forward to starting the League."
The message was clear: the hard part, the waiting, is over. Now comes the real work.
He underlined how much easier that work becomes when you’re surrounded by this level of quality. "Very good. I think with these teammates, everything is easier. These were the first minutes of the season, and little by little, I’m finding my rhythm, and soon the real competition begins."
Every debut has its own backstory. For Cucurella, this one is built on years of persistence and the belief that a moment like this would arrive.
"I am very happy. Behind all this, there is a lot of work, and all the effort I’ve put in over the years has been worth it," he reflected. "I’m very happy with everything that’s happening to me, and I hope it continues this way - winning titles and, above all, being able to enjoy this experience."
That ambition fits neatly with the demands at Real Madrid. Titles are not a dream here; they are an expectation. Cucurella knows it, and he is already speaking the language of the dressing room.
He also made a point of highlighting the human side of that dressing room. Integration can make or break a new signing at a club of this size, but the defender insisted the group has smoothed his transition.
"They are really good people. I think they make it very easy for everyone to adapt," he explained. "The important thing is to have a good group so that it shows on the field that we are united. That’s how you win."

"When asked about the support from fans, Cucurella said: "I’ve received many messages, and I will always try to give my best in every minute I have. I think the most important thing, and what we all want, is to win titles with this jersey."
