Marc Guehi Reflects on Manchester City's Lack of Aggression in Champions League Defeat to PSG
Manchester City defender Marc Guehi was straightforward about his team's performance after their 4-2 loss to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League. Despite a standout night for Erling Haaland, the Premier League champions faced a tough challenge, especially early on at the Etihad Stadium.
The visitors took control early with goals from Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele, and Vitinha, leaving City's defense exposed. Guehi admitted the first half was disappointing, saying, "We need to do a lot better, myself included, for the first two goals." He pointed out that PSG's greater aggression helped them dominate the initial period. "I think they were a bit more aggressive and won a lot of one-on-one duels in the first half which allowed them the platform to score those goals," he explained.
Improved Intensity After the Break
The second half featured intense attacking from both sides, with a total of 42 shots on goal during the match. Guehi highlighted the change in approach after halftime: "The second half I think was the complete opposite, we were a lot more aggressive. We won a lot more of the duels which gave us the platform to go and score those goals." City managed to create 21 chances in the second half but couldn’t close the gap fully.
Reflecting on the overall game, Guehi found some positives despite the rough start. "Not the best first half but a lot of positives to take from the second half. It says a lot about not just the players but the football club in general, the fans stuck by us the whole game. The support was amazing," he remarked.
Focus on Bouncing Back
With the Champions League still early in its group stage, Guehi stressed the importance of learning from this defeat rather than dwelling on it. "I think every single person knew that as long as we kept fighting, there was something there for us. I think it’s only the beginning of the competition," he said confidently. He believes these lessons will help City maintain their form domestically and improve in future matches.
