Marcus Rashford's Future at Barcelona in Doubt as Anthony Gordon Arrives
Anthony Gordon has walked into Marcus Rashford’s summer. And he might walk him out of Barcelona.
Rashford’s loan spell in Catalonia has been productive enough: 14 goals and 14 assists, a profile-raising season in a side still trying to rediscover its old swagger. Hansi Flick wants him to stay. He has pushed internally for the deal to be completed.
But the numbers tell a different story to the coach’s wishes.
Barcelona have a €30m (£26m) option to buy from Manchester United, with a deadline of June 15. That is a relatively modest fee in today’s market for a forward of Rashford’s pedigree and output. Even so, the club’s hierarchy are hesitating.
The Gordon deal is the reason.
Gordon’s Arrival Changes the Equation
Barcelona have moved aggressively for Anthony Gordon, hijacking what had looked like a smooth path to Bayern Munich. The Catalan club have agreed a £70m fee with Newcastle United, a package that could climb to £80m with add-ons.
Fabrizio Romano reported that Gordon would land in Barcelona “right after lunch” today, with medical tests scheduled for the afternoon. A marquee signing, a major outlay, and a clear statement about the profile of winger Flick will have at his disposal next season.
Inside the club, that move has complicated Rashford’s case. Decision-makers at the Nou Camp now view his permanent stay as “more complicated” in light of Gordon’s imminent arrival, according to The Athletic.
Flick remains keen. Others are not convinced.
Rashford Camp Still Hopeful
For now, Rashford and his representatives are in limbo. The Athletic report that sources close to the player insist no final decision has been communicated. They still believe there is a chance he remains at Barcelona next season, even with Gordon walking through the door.
Time is against them. Manchester United’s June 15 deadline for triggering the €30m option is looming, and Barcelona are reluctant to commit. They would prefer another loan rather than paying the full fee, but United have shown no appetite to renegotiate the structure.
United’s stance is clear: the option is there, take it or leave it.
United Don’t Want Rashford Back
The twist in all this is that Manchester United do not plan to reintegrate Rashford under Michael Carrick. The club, now operating under the INEOS regime, are prepared to move on if Barcelona walk away.
That puts them in the market for an alternative solution, and several scenarios are already in play.
A swap deal with AC Milan has been floated, one that would see Rafael Leao head to Old Trafford. Reports in Italy suggest Milan have slashed Leao’s asking price from £86m to £43m, a figure that has caught United’s attention. The idea remains speculative, but it underlines United’s readiness to reshape their attack without Rashford.
Arsenal, Spurs and Villa Lurking
If Barcelona step aside, the queue will not be short.
According to the Daily Mail, Arsenal, Tottenham and Aston Villa have all discussed the possibility of moving for Rashford. These are not tentative name-checks. They are clubs with Champions League or European ambitions, looking for a forward who can change games and tilt tight contests.
Arsenal are searching for added firepower and versatility across the front line. Tottenham want more goals and speed in Ange Postecoglou’s high-tempo system. Aston Villa, under Unai Emery, are building a squad to sustain their rise and need depth for the demands of Europe.
Each of them can see the opportunity. A 26-year-old England international, available at a fee well below the going rate for elite attackers, with a point to prove.
Yet one detail still shapes the entire picture: Rashford’s preference.
The Mail report that his dream is to stay with Flick’s Barcelona. That desire, for now, keeps the spotlight firmly on the Nou Camp boardroom.
They have the option. They have the deadline. They have Gordon on the way.
Something has to give.
