Marcus Rashford is set for his first Manchester United appearance since December 2024 – and the stage could hardly be more intriguing.
Across the pitch in Poland will be Ruben Amorim, now in charge of AC Milan, the coach who froze Rashford out and effectively pushed him towards the exit door before his loans to Aston Villa and Barcelona. A pre-season friendly between two European heavyweights suddenly comes with a sharp personal edge.
Rashford’s reset
This trip, United’s final summer friendly, is being framed inside the club as the first real step towards Rashford’s reset at his boyhood side. He sat out the 1-1 draw with Leeds United in Dublin on Wednesday, along with Lisandro Martinez and Kobbie Mainoo, as Michael Carrick held them back for the weekend.
“Marcus, Licha and Kobbie only came back a couple of days ago so they're not quite ready but we can have them for the weekend,” Carrick explained after the Leeds game. The message was clear: no risks, but the wait is almost over.
Carrick outlined the plan behind the scenes. “We trained hard, the boys who came in, Marcus, Kobbie and Licha have trained really hard and we'll have a recovery day tomorrow. We'll all recover tomorrow, train Friday and prepare for the game on Saturday [against Milan]. Again, we'll get the balance right of minutes."
The expectation is that Rashford, Martinez and Mainoo will all start on the bench in Poland, eased back into action with controlled minutes, just as United did with those who went deep into the World Cup. It is careful management, but also a quiet statement: these are central pieces for the season ahead.
Selection puzzles for Carrick
While Rashford’s return draws the spotlight, Carrick has several other calls to make.
Mason Mount, Harry Maguire and Benjamin Sesko are all doubtful after missing the draw with Leeds, leaving the coaching staff to juggle options in key areas. The upside? A potential first look at Bruno Fernandes and summer signing Youri Tielemans together from the start in midfield – a pairing United fans have been waiting to see.
Up front, the picture is less settled. Matheus Cunha made his first appearance of pre-season in midweek, which hands Carrick another option through the middle. Patrick Dorgu and Amad Diallo have been operating off the flanks in support of lone striker Bryan Mbeumo, giving United a fluid, mobile front line.
Now Carrick must decide whether to stick with that structure or hand Cunha more responsibility as he builds fitness. Rashford’s likely cameo from the bench only adds to the possibilities.

Strip away the friendly tag and this still feels like a moment for Rashford. He returns to United colours against the coach whose decisions helped send him on a winding route through Aston Villa and Barcelona.
