Marcus Rashford Set to Rejoin Manchester United for Pre-Season Tour
Marcus Rashford is on course to rejoin Manchester United’s pre-season tour in Ireland, with the forward expected to link up with Michael Carrick’s squad in time for the friendly against Leeds United in Dublin on August 12, according to The Guardian.
If the plan holds, it will mark the end of a long, strange exile.
Rashford has not played a competitive minute for United since a 2-1 Europa League win away to Viktoria Plzen in December 2024, when Ruben Amorim substituted him on 56 minutes and then effectively shut the door on him. From that night, he was frozen out completely. His Old Trafford career went on pause while he went on the road.
A loan to Aston Villa came first. Barcelona followed. It was in Catalonia that Rashford finally rediscovered his edge, scoring 14 goals and delivering the clincher in Barça’s title-sealing win over Real Madrid in May. That should have been the moment that settled his future. It did not.
Barcelona chose not to trigger their purchase option, instead moving for Anthony Gordon from Newcastle in a £60.7m deal. At the same time, a £40m Premier League exit clause in Rashford’s United contract quietly expired in early July without a buyer. The market blinked. Nobody moved.
United, for their part, have drawn their own lines. There will be no second loan to Barcelona. There is no appetite to sell below their valuation. Rashford remains on around £17.5m a year with two years left on his deal, and for now, there is no obvious escape route.
That reality points him back to Carrick.
A Different Dynamic Under Carrick
The relationship with the current manager is not the problem. Unlike the breakdown under Amorim, there are no reported issues between Rashford and Carrick. Tribal Football reported earlier this month that Carrick is open to working with the forward, and conversations over his pre-season status have been active behind the scenes.
The Guardian reports that the club’s plan is straightforward: Rashford returns to United’s pre-season after his mandatory three-week break following England’s World Cup campaign. With England reaching the semi-finals, the earliest he can realistically be back in training is around August 10.
That timing makes Dublin the natural re-entry point. Croke Park. Leeds United. A neutral venue, but a charged setting for a player trying to re-establish himself in front of a fanbase that has not seen him in United colours since last year.
If he is fit and available, that friendly becomes more than a tune-up. It becomes an audition.
A Tour With Stakes
United’s pre-season tour has already wound its way through northern Europe: Wrexham in Helsinki, Rosenborg in Trondheim, Atlético Madrid in Stockholm, PSG in Gothenburg. Carrick has been shaping his side without Rashford, testing combinations and sharpening fitness.
Ireland is next. Leeds at Croke Park on August 12, then AC Milan in Wroclaw on August 15. A week later comes the trip to Hull and the start of the Premier League season.
Within that schedule, the Leeds game stands out as the more likely starting point for Rashford’s reintegration, with Milan offering a second, sterner examination. Two matches, three days apart, against contrasting opposition. Two chances for Carrick to see if the Barcelona version of Rashford can translate back into a United shirt.
United’s stance is clear: their preference remains a permanent sale at the right price. But the market has cooled on a player who, on his day, can still bend a game to his will. A strong showing in Dublin and Wroclaw will not just be about winning over Carrick; it could jolt the final weeks of the summer window into life.
For now, Rashford is caught between two futures: the revival story under a new manager, or the late-window move that resets his career elsewhere. The next step comes in Ireland, and this time, he cannot afford to disappear.
