Marshall Comes Back Strong to Defeat VCU 3-1
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall took a punch, steadied itself, and then tore through VCU.
Down a goal inside seven minutes, the No. 15 Thundering Herd roared back with three unanswered strikes to beat the Rams 3-1 on Sunday night at Hoops Family Field, pushing their record to 2-0-2.
Early mistake, early punishment
The night started in the worst possible way for Marshall. A defensive lapse opened the door for VCU’s Ty Johnson, who broke in alone on goal. He calmly lifted the ball over goalkeeper Yurij Obert and tapped it in, silencing the home crowd and giving the visitors a 1-0 lead before the match had even settled.
On the touchline, Chris Grassie watched another new-look lineup feel its way into the game.
"We have a lot of new players. I think it takes time to gel and get the things we need," the Marshall head coach said. "The way we pass balls is our communication. We make actions on the field, we move in a certain motion. We're always communicating with our teammates around us and I think that communication has moments of pure clarity and moments of confusion. I think we have to ride this out. There's a very good team in there somewhere, but we have to go through the rigors to make sure we gel and get our communication spot on."
The response came quickly.
Apolinario stunner flips the mood
Eight minutes after the opener, Marshall struck back with a moment of pure quality. Goncalo Machado slid a pass into space for Thiago Apolinario, who didn’t hesitate. From nearly 40 yards out, Apolinario unleashed a drive that caught VCU goalkeeper Manuel Monteiro off guard and ripped into the net.

VCU refused to fade. The Rams carved out chances throughout the rest of the first half, forcing Marshall to defend deeper than Grassie would have liked. When the back line bent, Obert held firm. His save in the 31st minute kept the match tied and sent the teams into halftime deadlocked.
Roberto swings it, Obert protects it
Marshall came out of the break with more edge and purpose, and the payoff arrived almost immediately.
At 49:26, a deflection fell to Joao Roberto just outside the 18-yard box. He pounced, driving a low shot past Monteiro to put the Herd in front 2-1. From chasing the game to controlling it in the space of a few key moments.
From there, it was about game management and grit.
VCU kept asking questions. Obert kept answering them. The Marshall keeper produced another important stop in the 59th minute, then again in the 85th, each time preserving the slender one-goal cushion and draining belief from the Rams.
Romberg slams the door
As stoppage time approached, VCU pushed higher, desperate for an equalizer. That desperation turned costly.
In the 90th minute, a VCU mistake left Carl Romberg clean through on goal. He made no mistake, slotting home the final goal of the night to seal a 3-1 win for Marshall and cap a composed second-half display.
The Herd had been rattled early. By the end, they looked like a ranked team grinding through the growing pains Grassie described and still finding a way to win.
Marshall now stays home, with Utah Valley visiting Hoops Family Field on Friday at 7:15 p.m. Another test, another chance for this revamped side to turn those “moments of confusion” into the clarity their coach insists is already in there.
