Martin Sherif Charged with Breaching FA Betting Regulations
The Football Association has charged Everton forward Martin Sherif with multiple alleged breaches of strict betting regulations, placing the 19-year-old’s fledgling career under serious threat.
In a statement released on Wednesday, the FA confirmed that Sherif is accused of placing 61 bets on football matches over a 15‑month spell, from 20 November 2024 to 12 February 2026, in alleged contravention of FA Rule E1.2. He has been given until Monday 17 August to respond to the charges.
“Martin Sherif of Everton FC has been charged with breaching the FA's betting rules,” the governing body said. “It's alleged that the player breached FA Rule E1.2 in respect of 61 bets placed on football matches between 20 November 2024 and 12 February 2026. Martin Sherif has until Monday 17 August to provide a response.”
For a player still waiting for his senior Everton debut, the stakes could hardly be higher.
Young prospect under scrutiny
Sherif has been on Everton’s books since the age of 13 and is regarded as one of the more promising attacking talents to come through the club’s academy in recent years. He has trained with the first team but has yet to make a competitive appearance for the senior side.
To accelerate his development, Everton sent him out on loan last season. His first stop was Rotherham United in League One, where he managed two goals in 10 league games before injuries cut short his spell in December. After recovering, he joined Port Vale on loan in February, scoring twice in 17 matches. His efforts were not enough to prevent Vale from slipping into League Two.
Those months were supposed to be about learning the rigours of senior football. Instead, they now sit in the shadow of an investigation that could shape the rest of his career.
Everton’s internal response
Everton have yet to issue a formal public statement on the FA charges. Behind the scenes, though, the club has started to move. According to a report in The Athletic, a source close to the club indicated that Everton intend to handle the matter internally while cooperating fully with the FA.
The same source stressed that the club plans to support Sherif through the process, as he works with his legal representatives to prepare his response before the FA’s deadline. For all the seriousness of the allegations, there is a clear recognition that this is a young player at a critical point in his life and career.
Betting rules and possible punishment
English football’s betting rules are unambiguous. Players are banned from betting on any football match anywhere in the world. The policy is designed to protect the integrity of the sport at every level, and the FA has shown in recent years that it is prepared to impose heavy sanctions on those who breach the regulations.
